On Sunday afternoon, Engine 43, Marine 43 and the Deputy Fire Chief were requested to assist the National Park Service and the Marine Mammal Stranding Center with relocating three dolphins that were stuck in some marshland. Members were able to recover the three dolphins where they were turned over to MMSC for additional care and rehab.

Who you callin’ late? We still have piping plovers on NYC beaches. On October 10! Yes, it’s World Migratory Bird Day and this year’s theme is “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter,” but these plovers will be on their way soon!

Huge thanks to our very dedicated @nycploverproject team member and skilled photographer @forbesfeather, for documenting the 2-3 lingering plovers seen this week at @gatewaynps Breezy Point Tip. We have seen upwards of 15 plovers over the past few weeks at this migratory hotspot which hosts thousands of sanderlings, sandpipers, various species of plovers and large roosts of multiple gull species. While it’s not uncommon to have late migrating plovers passing through into October, beach driving has returned to this beach. Note the piping plovers dozing in the vehicle ruts!

We ask ORV permit holders to access the area responsibly, for fishing only, following the guidelines as clearly written with the pass on recreation.gov — 15 mph, less around people and wildlife; stay out of the dunes; no pets; access from sand access road only. To learn more, search: recreation.gov + Breezy Point Tip. If you see harassment of wildlife, or irresponsible behavior, at this natural beach, please call park dispatch at (718) 354-4700.

Every bird counts, your observations matter.

We’re still buzzing from Floyd Bennett Field! Public Arts Festival from this past Saturday, October 3 😊

An estimated 2,200 of our friends and neighbors came out to the free evening event. Embracing a vibrant “dinner and a show” format, families and visitors gathered early on the lawn to enjoy a community-wide BYO picnic dinner, before enjoying art and seeing the possibilities of activating Hangars 3 & 4 at Floyd Bennett Field.

We’re inviting everyone to help shape the future of Floyd Bennett Field by joining the newly launched “Fifty for Floyd Bennett Field” campaign. The initiative invites everyone to contribute $50—or whatever they can, from $5 to $500 and beyond—to support the rehabilitation and reactivation of historic Hangars 3 & 4 as vibrant year-round spaces for arts, education, research, recreation, and community gathering.

To learn more about the future of Floyd Bennett Field, and how you can contribute, head to JBRPC.org/future OR the link in our bio.
