What a powerful Juneteenth Gospel Celebration!

We gathered to honor the rich legacy, faith, and musical excellence of gospel pioneers who have impacted generations. Special recognition to David R. Curry, The Williams Brothers, The Jackson Southernaires, and The Canton Spirituals for their unwavering contributions to gospel music and ministry.

Thank you to My City Jackson and Visit Jackson, under the leadership of Yolanda Clay Moore, for creating a space where culture, history, faith, and community could come together in such a meaningful way.

Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is worth celebrating, history is worth preserving, and our stories are worth telling. Through songs of hope, perseverance, and praise, we honor those who paved the way and inspire those who will carry the torch forward.

Phase 1: Intro to Project 5th-Quarter Bantaba 🇬🇳🪘🇸🇳

Over the past four years, I have participated in the creation of an amazing cultural work, 5th-Quarter Bantaba. This work examines & combines the drum and dance traditions of HBCU marching bands, Sabar (Wolof people of current-day Senegal), and Dundunba (Malinke people of current-day Guinea).

Although it says 2023, it all started my senior year in college 2022. The current J5 squad at the time was honored to teach a workshop class requested by Ms. Latanya D. Tigner @dancing_cyiphers! The unique style of the Jackson State University Drum Major marching fundamentals/routines caught the attention of Ms.Tigner & she decided to include us in her amazing project. Showcasing the resemblance shown between the cultures!

This was called the intro because it was our first time in their creative space & we are forever grateful for it. @gavinrhughes , @_johnathanjohnson , @mr._tmz & I had the privilege to travel & experience the project first hand! We joined with the amazing D5 @raycreational @jordon3d @jb_gifted2amaze @jfresh_inc @shawn_purpose87 to combine our unique style with the cultural practices of Doundounba, Takosoba, Bolokolodo & Sabar rhythm!

Part one, stay tuned for more phases.
