A site is never a blank canvas.

Yesterday on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Meighan King Wall of Two Row Architect joined our Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto teams for a conversation about design, land, relationships and the assumptions we bring into practice.

Meighan spoke about Two Row’s approach to placekeeping and the importance of staying connected to people, process and land from the very beginning of a project.

What stayed with us was a simple but important idea: good design isn’t only about the outcome. It’s also about how we listen, who we learn from and the relationships we build along the way.

We’re grateful to Meighan for sharing her story and perspective with us.

The High Commission of Canada in Trinidad and Tobago commemorated the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with a special presentation by Hamish Hunter, an Indigenous employee at the Mission.

The session brought together High Commission staff, members of the Indigenous community of Trinidad and Tobago, and representatives of the diplomatic missions of Chile, Peru, Mexico, Panama and Colombia.
Hamish shared reflections on the meaning of reconciliation, the history and experiences of Indigenous Peoples in Canada, and Canada’s ongoing efforts to acknowledge the harms caused by the residential school system and other injustices, while advancing reconciliation and redress.

The Canadian Irish Migration Preservation Network recognizes and honours National Truth and Reconciliation Day today. A day dedicated to honouring the survivors of residential schools and their families, as well as acknowledging the lasting impact of that school system on Indigenous communities across Canada. It’s also Orange Shirt Day, a commemorative day led by Indigenous communities to raise awareness about the intergenerational impacts of residential schools. 🧡🪶☘️

September 30 is a day to pause, remember, listen, and reflect. 🧡

Today, we honour residential school Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and hold space for the families and communities who continue to carry the impacts and legacy of the residential school system.

Truth and Reconciliation is not a one-day commitment.

It asks us to keep learning.
To listen.
To reflect.
And to keep showing up.

At Mind Your Plastic, we work with schools and communities across Canada. We know that every community is different, with its own history, knowledge, relationships with land and water, and priorities.

That means that our work must begin with listening. We are committed to learning from the communities that we work alongside and to working respectfully with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities and schools across Canada, wherever that work takes us.

Today, we remember.
We listen.
We reflect.
And we carry that responsibility forward. 🧡

Folks today orange is the code 🧡 - not for a weather warning but for Indigenous reconciliation.

September 30th marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day – Every Child Matters.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th represents the multi-generational trauma caused by residential and day schools, where Indigenous children never returned home, survivors, and their families.

The federal statutory holiday presents an opportunity to commit to the process of truth, justice, and reconciliation with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis in Toronto and across the country.

As a person from one of the oldest indigenous regions in the world and of that descent- The Caribbean, specifically Trinidad and Tobago (formerly known as Kairi 🇹🇹 - The Land of Hummingbirds), I stand in solidarity with Indigenous people on Turtle Island🍁🇨🇦 , understanding that honouring the Residential School Survivors, their families, and those who never returned home is not something to just keep in the past, but to remember the generational massive impact that it has had on their communities up till today. You cannot call a landmass your home and not understand the history of the people of the land that you call your home.

Empowering people through finance is wonderful but it is even more powerful to empower the people of the land who create opportunities for myself and others to make this possible.

To the children that survived and didn’t survive, you will always matter. Your history will continue to be remembered 🧡.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is dedicated to honouring Residential School Survivors, their families, and the communities impacted by the Residential School System. The United Church of Canada operated 15 schools between 1925 and 1969. In 2026, there is still work to be done. Knox-St. Paul's and all faith communities within the United Church are committed to the work of Truth and Reconciliation. #knoxstpaulsunitedchurch #ndtr #truthandreconciliation #everychildmatters #reconciliation
