I traveled around this beautiful country for 5 years with the main goal of climbing as much as possible. It was without a doubt one of the most fulfilling and adventurous times in my life but something in me still felt empty…

I was a self proclaimed dirt bag, a vagabond, I was nobody. I loved being nobody, it was a chance to lose self importance as my father would say, the practice of being selfless. Initially to many, this concept sounds sad, people might try to talk you out of it cause they just want to help you feel important…

I climbed in 12 states during this time all over the west coast, I was on the circuit. The thing about being on the circuit is that you and the people you meet are all transients. You will make some of the best friends imaginable, you will likely make friends for life, but at the end of the season everyone you know goes their own way. You will have a lot of lonely nights, places of deep self discovery with scattered yearnings of belonging. At this time I was living the dream! It wasn’t until I settled in Flagstaff that I realized what I was missing…

Eureka for Urika! Urika is a Native American word to embody selflessness, community spirit, and positive contributions, it means being useful to all. I found myself in community! For the first time in my life I made friends who were being of service, who were accomplished individuals, all of them impressive in their unique ways. I was able to put 2 and 2 together…Wow! I can be selfless while being somebody in a community!? In fact this was absolutely the best way to practice this. I now had people around me who weren’t going anywhere at the end of the season. It was stability, it was community, It was love and this is what belonging is all about! Being of service to others from selflessness and love. A deep thank-you to everyone in the Flagstaff community that allowed me to experience this, you know who you are!
