Today, we showed up for our city! Bridgeport has been ground zero for ICE kidnappings, election interference, and strongmen who believe they are above accountability and the law.

Today we took the message to the streets! Power belongs to the people! ✊🏾✌🏼🙌🏽

Thank you to everyone who showed up despite the wind and the cold to say ICE YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE! HANDS OFF OUR VOTES!

What #Bridgeport needs right now is some LOVE! Love for our community, our democracy, our schools, our kids and our history! Thanks to SOW CT (Supporting Organizing Work) for giving @gemeem the space to share reflections on our 10 year-long movement for a beloved Bridgeport!

It’s hard to believe that we are here. Again. But as they say, those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

On May 25, 2020, Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes, while Mr. Floyd was handcuffed, lying face down in the street, shouting “I can’t breathe!” Captured on video, Mr. Floyd’s public murder rocked our nation to its core and birthed a summer of uprisings and protests.

No city was immune to this reckoning. Not even our city. That summer, four Black high school students from Central High School organized a march to the Columbus statue in Seaside Park to call for its immediate removal. These young women did not ask anyone’s permission. They did what they saw was just, moral and necessary..

The efforts by four high school students opened our collective eyes and with clarity, we could all see that the Christopher Columbus statue has no public place in Bridgeport. While even then we recognized this was painful for some, it was time to tell the truth and refuse to look away.

About 70% of Bridgeport residents identify as Black, Puerto Rican, and Latino. What unites their migration stories is that they all have direct ancestry that suffered under the violent European colonization of the Americas, the enslavement and genocide of Indigenous people, and the trans-Atlantic slave trade that enriched the European continent for hundreds of years.

The people who are proposing the Columbus statue be returned — Christopher Caruso of Bridgeport, Mayor Mark Lauretti of Shelton, and Dan Onofrio of Shelton — must acknowledge this truth. And they have a moral obligation to not only recognize the racial and ethnic reality of Bridgeport, but also to respect it.

There is no common ground to be found by forcing the return of the Christopher Columbus statue to Seaside Park because its presence there serves no common good.

But if a small group of people are determined to repeat history, we will be prepared to stand up and fight once more.

Yesterday, we celebrated the life, laughter and love of Ronelle Swagerty.

We laughed. We cried. We grieved. And we gave our hugs and condolences to her beautiful family. To her husband Mark, her daughter Kimani, and her mother Trish - we loved Ronelle and we miss her dearly.

It’s hard to believe she’s not still here with us. Her smile was infectious. Her leadership was contagious. And her heart was full of love the people and the city of Bridgeport.

Ronelle was quick with a pen, and she would be the first to copy edit our grammar. Her voice broke through the noise. She was instrumental in building up people to fight for democracy- and if she had a way of doing something, it’s what we did!

She was unafraid to put her name behind causes and people she believed in and we know she believed in all of us, in our movement for change in the city, and in the power of everyday Bridgeporters to determine our own future.

Ronelle - We miss you, we love you. Thank you. 🩷

#BRIDGEPORT! One week ago, we traveled to D.C. for the national #LivingWageForAll convening. 💪🏽 Did you know that Federal minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25/hour since 2009? And there isn’t a single state in the country where a worker can live off less than $25/hour.

Surprise, surprise: The nation’s affordability crisis is also a wage crisis.

The Living Wage For All Act will raise the federal minimum wage to $25 per hour for ALL employees in all sectors:

* Large Employers (500+ employees or ≥ $1 billion in annual revenue): Must reach $25/hr by 2031.

* All Other Employers: Must reach $25/hr by 2038, starting with incremental annual increases.

Alongside partners @tcpactionfund @maketheroadct and @onefairwage (and despite the 🥵) we walked to the House and Senate Office Buildings and lobbied our entire congressional delegation - specifically asking all of our House members to sign on. Luckily, BOTH of our Senators are in strong support! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Key Lawmakers Behind the Legislation include:

* House of Representatives Sponsors: Representative Delia Ramirez officially introduced the House version (H.R. 8555) on April 28, 2026. She spearheaded the legislation alongside key co-leads Rep. Analilia Mejia (D-NJ), Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García (D-IL), and Rep. Lateefah Simon (D-CA).

* Senate Sponsor: Our own Senator Chris Murphy introduced the companion bill in the U.S. Senate on June 25, 2026, alongside his co-sponsor Sen. Richard Blumenthal.

AMERICANS ALREADY BELIEVE A LIVING WAGE IS $25–$30. When voters are asked what workers needs to get by — without prompting, without partisan framing — they answer $26 an hour. The center of gravity has moved.

It’s time our country’s laws moved along with it! 🩷#economicjustice #solidarity affordability
