Grazie mille Lino Brunetti for reviewing Carla's recent album "Beckonings" in the Nov. issue of Italian music mag Buscadero! If you haven't already checked it out, follow bio links to listen & procure the album 😊

Here's an edited translation:

"The return of [Carla Torgerson's] writing took the form of working with musicians such as Danny Godinez (electric guitars, backing vocals), Gary Palmer (piano, keyboards, vocals), Daniel Rapport (keyboards, bass), Adrian Van Batenburg and Jacob Evans (both drummers), with whom she rehearsed for seven months, before locking herself in the studio and recording "Beckonings" in just three days, with additional input from old friends Chris Eckman and Glen Slater on one piece each, and Anne Marie Ruljancich on violin, Heidi Wischler on trumpet, Michael Wells on harmonica, and Jim Roth on pedal steel and vibraphone.

... the album marks Torgerson's return with songs that retrace [The Walkabouts] folk-rock songwriting, slightly veined with country, for which she and the ensembles in which she played had become quite a cult. The vocals have become a little rougher, but the style has remained more or less the same, although there are a few more keyboards than usual here and there, which give the album a perhaps slightly dated 80s patina.

On the long and wonderful "Sunken Hearts" the voice is immersed in a warmer arrangement dictated by acoustic guitars and piano... "It's Been a Great Show" it's all Slater's solo piano and (sampled) clarinet. These are the autograph pieces, because in the first part of the album there are instead, one in a row, covers, brought back to their own sonic territory, be it the minor Springsteen of "Happy," the splendid reinterpretation, with Chris Eckman's shimmering guitar, of Terry Lee Hale's "Land of Plenty," the country waltz written by Beck "Please Leave a Light on When You Go" or the title track penned by Chris, rhythmically enlivened, but ultimately an intimate ballad, caressed by pedal steel."
