@rory.makes showcasing his 'Sounds like Imagination' installation @svajohnstgallery

Rory Thomas Lawton and Mike Peters collaborated with students at Stroud College and @mould_collective to record sounds from the earth at Stratford Park and Zero Dig at Oakbrook Farm.

They used a geophone, a microphone that listens underground, to record these hidden sounds of the soil.

Thanks to Alex from @generation.soil for loaning us some brilliant listening devices. And to @gail_ilieve for the wonderful Kokodama plants which Mould made last month.

The project brings attention to soil and life within it. It's an explorative immersive sound journey hidden within nature to elevate imagination and deepen listening.

Saturdays 10th + 17th October

Open 10am -3pm

SVA is working with @zerodig.earth and @curriculum_for_life to lead a creative engagement programme of art, sound and film projects focused on inspiring young people to be outside.

The project is funded by the European Union through the funding for the Soil Tribes programme Horizon project.

Here's the full programme for the weekend! We're open from 1pm to 5pm on both days, with a relaxed schedule and activities happening throughout those hours.

The only fixed deadline is the Cooking Competition, which closes at 2pm on Sunday 20 September. The winner will be announced once @chef.ben.harvey has tasted all the entries and made his decision. Let's give him an hour 😊

Other than that, just turn up and get stuck in!

Everything we make and collected/harvested over the weekend will be available to take home on a pay-what-you-can basis. Donations from the weekend will go towards supporting the BS3 Community Food Bank.

@generation.soil ✊🍎🍆🍓🥒🧑‍🌾

A speedy example of Josh and I preparing the soil in the polytunnel at @apricotcentre ;digging up any perennial weeds then rotavating, once prepared, we planted out 4 varieties of PakChoi, sowed some Rocket and then set up the irrigation system. We put one Sumi soaker in the tunnel, this will promote any weed growth, then we can go in and gently hoe the beds in a week or two.

We're proud to be part of the @southbristolartstrail and will be offering fun arts and crafts activities over the weekend!

Dress the jam jars in their own unique outfits, gracing kitchen shelves with style and poise.

What better way to use up scraps of fabric than to make rag bunting! Choose your colour scheme, cut the strips and tie them onto string to instantly decorate your room!

And it's back, paint your own pot (with pots kindly donated by @riversidegardencentre). Grab a brush, add a splash of colour to your pot then add some compost from @generation.soil and pot some seeds!

Meet Alex, the founder of Generation Soil, a Bristol project turning the city's food scraps into living soil! What started as noticing how much food was being thrown away has grown into a community composting scheme collecting from homes and businesses across Bristol.

From Alex:
For me, it's all about closing the loop. I love that a bucket of food scraps from someone's kitchen can come back a few months later as living compost that grows more food. Soil is the most overlooked, alive, extraordinary thing under our feet, and I can't stop talking about it.

Plans for BS3 Jammin':

I'll be bringing soil to life! Come and listen to soil through headphones (yes, really), meet the worms, and see how your food scraps become living compost. I'd love to show people that the stuff we throw away is the start of the whole cycle, not the end of it.

Why I Love BS3 Jammin':

I love that it takes something we usually waste without noticing, gluts of fruit and veg, and turns it into a reason for the whole community to come together. It's the same idea we're built on: nothing's waste if you know what to do with it.

Alex is saving the world, one handful of soil at a time.

When he doesn’t have shingles. 😂🌱

Find a guy who looks at you the way I look at trees 🌳

Such a fantastic day at @belmont.estate last week, getting a tour of their land regeneration project just 20 minutes west of Bristol.

We explored their forest, home to trees hundreds of years old, led by their Head of Nature Connection, Martin Williams, and bumped into some Iron Age pigs and cattle chilling in the shade.

I felt such an appreciation for those trees sheltering us from the heatwave. My rented studio flat, built around 1910, succeeds at both being freezing and damp in winter and boiling in summer. But under the canopy, moving around outside was so refreshing. I could get used to this.

So maybe we should plant more trees? 🌱

Big thanks to @teddytoynton and @eddie___frank from @consciousplanet for organising the day.

Lovely to finally meet Amy from @inthecottagegarden in person after being connected since the 50 Ways To Cook days 🌻, and to meet the wonderful @_josephineelaine too.

The #BottomUp campaign from @sustainablefashionweek_uk wants us to protect our assets from the chemicals and synthetic fibres found in so much of our underwear!

I was back with the team to see what impact the pants were having on the environment - and whether what they’re made of affects how they break down.

It had been three months and, as you can see, the difference was pretty incredible!

They’re back in the ground now, but we’ll be back later in the year to check on them and test the soil.

I won’t be throwing away my current pants - use what you have, it’s the most sustainable thing to do! But when the time comes to replace them, I’ll definitely be looking at what they’re made from.

And it is not just about where our clothes come from - it’s about where they end up too.

My garden isn’t perfect… and I wouldn’t change it

This isn’t a show garden, and that’s exactly the point. It’s not perfectly landscaped, colour-coordinated or always tidy. It’s a working garden that gets used every single day.

This is where I grow food, experiment with new ideas, film my gardening videos, take cuttings, pot up plants, and prepare seedlings for the allotment. The greenhouse is always busy, the pots are constantly being moved around, and there’s usually a project on the go.

It’s also a garden that works for real life. It’s where the pets spend their time, where the washing gets dried, where I sit in the sun with a coffee, and where I unwind after a long day. It’s a place for growing, creating, filming, relaxing, and getting ready for the next allotment job.

I think there’s something special about a garden that earns its keep. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be productive, peaceful and full of life. Sometimes the best gardens are the ones that are actually lived in.

Follow @thegardenersadventure for more honest gardening, allotment updates and growing tips.
