“Any plan you make today is not going to get you where you’ll ultimately go. Not only does the road change while you’re on it, but you – the traveler – change too.”

I wrote this for my Ted Talk in 2019, and it’s a line that keeps floating into my mind as I reflect on the end of Generation Spirit.

The road changed while we were on it. When we launched in 2009, few schools offered inclusive activities for students with disabilities. For years, we were the ones introducing the concept to our partner schools. Sometimes I flash back to the months we spent convincing my high school to start the original Sparkles team. The hesitancy. The concern. The lack of faith in students’ ability to lead or support such a program.

Then I think about my same school today. Today’s students have never known a football game without the Sparkles on the sideline. To them, inclusive or adaptive programming isn’t new or noteworthy. It’s normal. When I think about that, I can’t help but think: mission accomplished.

Of course, that’s just one school. I’m not naive to the work that still needs to be done – the miles we have to go before people with disabilities are given the dignity, accessibility and equality they deserve. The fight continues, and I intend to keep fighting even as this chapter comes to a close.

The traveler changed too. Half of my life has revolved around GenS. At fifteen, I was lost and confused — unsure where I belonged (or if I belonged at all). The Sparkles (and then GenS) scooped me up and gave me wings. I’ve had more once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and experiences than I can count. I’ve met the most incredible, passionate friends and collaborators. In creating belonging for others, I finally found it for myself.

But as time has marched on, I’ve found myself wondering: is this it? Or is there more that I can do? More that I can be? That curiosity quickly grew to longing. For a fresh start. For new challenges. New ways to find meaning.

Leaving GenS behind is scary, but it’s time. It’s time for the organization, and time for me. It’s certainly a season of change, but I’m doing well and feel full of enthusiasm for what’s next. More on that soon 😉
