Have you ever wondered what K-Pop was before BTS? Well, if you’ve never heard of the The Kim Sisters, you may be surprised to find out how they were already breaking barriers in American entertainment. Long before APIDA representation became part of mainstream conversation, they were already performing in the 1950s and 60s for audiences who had rarely seen Asian artists in popular media.

The Kim Sisters, Aija, Mia, and Sook-ja Kim, grew up in post-war Korea. Their father, a composer, was killed during the Korean War, and their mother, a traditional Korean singer, struggled to support the family. For them, music became survival, expression, and connection. They began performing for American troops stationed in Korea, singing English songs they learned phonetically and blending them with Korean musical traditions. Their talent stood out, and they were eventually brought to the United States, an almost unheard of opportunity for Asian performers at the time. In the U.S. they performed in clubs and night venues, and later appeared on national television reaching millions of viewers. Success often meant adaptation, learning songs in another language, adjusting pronunciation, and reshaping performances to fit expectations.

Now, their story is more than history, it’s a reflection. Today, APIDA artists have more visibility, but the question remains: who gets to be seen without being reshaped first? Who still has to translate themselves to be accepted?
The Kim Sisters remind us that representation didn’t begin recently, it was built by people carving space where none existed. But it came with cost: constant adaptation and pressure to fit into another’s idea of belonging. What we carry forward is their resilience and artistry. What we work to change in the “Now” is the expectation that visibility must come through compromise. Advocacy today means supporting APIDA voices that are fully seen, fully heard, and fully themselves.
