🏔️ India's Landscapes Decoded - 10

Ever seen an X-ray of a mountain? 🤯

When I stopped here, I wasn't looking at the river.

I was looking at the folded layers exposed in the cliff.

Most people admire mountains from the outside. Geologists are always trying to see what's hidden inside.

These folds tell us that the rocks beneath our feet haven't remained untouched. They've been bent, squeezed, and deformed, leaving clues about the forces that shaped the landscape.

That's why I love river-cut cliffs.

They're one of the few places where nature lets us peek inside a mountain.

$Meet Mr. Nice Gneiss😁😁 Gneiss represents the pinnacle of regional metamorphism, originating from a sedimentary protolith like shale or the s-type granite that is dragged deep into the crust. Under intense heat and directed pressure, the minerals undergo metamorphic differentiation, a process where chemical ions migrate to physically reorganize the rock into distinct “stripes” known as gneissose banding. This separates the light-colored felsic minerals, like quartz and feldspar, into leucocratic layers, while the denser, iron-rich mafic minerals like biotite and amphibole concentrate into dark, melanocratic bands. Because these rocks form at great depths, often 15 to 30 kilometers down, the crystals have ample time to grow, resulting in a coarse-grained, crystalline texture that reveals the ancient tectonic stresses that once squeezed and stretched the crust like a stiff liquid. When the temperature climbs even higher toward the “melting curve,” the gneiss begins to cross the threshold into the igneous realm, creating migmatite. The light-colored “bleb” is a leucosome, a pocket of rock where the felsic stripes actually reached their melting point and turned into a granitic liquid before recrystallizing in place. Because the original shale was rich in aluminum and silica, this partial melt is specifically an S-type (sedimentary-derived) granite, often identified by “fingerprint” minerals like garnet or muscovite. This leucosome is frequently surrounded by a dark, unmelted melanosome rim of refractory minerals, marking the exact transition where a metamorphic rock begins to generate new magma and become a plutonic igneous body.#geology #sedimentaryrock #goldexploration #earthhistory #metamorphicrock$
