WORLD CHAMPION!!

This year was anything but smooth. I didn’t race particularly well all year. Honestly, I hadn’t raced well for the last two years. But training really clicked this year with some new ideas. I knew at some point all this hard work would show up. My job was to keep showing up everyday, regardless of how things were going. This process over the past two years has allowed my faith to grow in the man upstairs. My faith is the backbone of who I am as a person, and that is something I’m really proud of.

I want to give a shout out to some very special people. First and most importantly, my wife. Cherie has had my back ever since we started dating and is big reason for my success on and off the track. She has taught me I am more than an athlete, which has allowed me to enjoy all aspects of my life. Success like this is so much sweeter because I’m not just a world champion, and it is amazing to share this win as a team!

To my family, I’m honestly lost for words. The support you have showed me over my career I could never repay you for, but I can say those phone calls post race are moments I will never forget.

A huge thank you to my performance team, especially the two at the top, Coach Heather and my uncle Trevor, who has kept me healthy my entire career. They both helped create a program that worked best for me and being injury free all season set up perfectly to race well when it mattered. I’d even go so far to say that my execution at Worlds might have been the best of my career. Trevor and his son Luke even came to our pre-camp in Dubai to make sure I was all ready to go for Worlds.

The work went beyond the two that I mentioned. India made for a challenging world championships to prepare for and my team absolutely nailed it- Jessalyn O’Donnell, Ollie Armstrong, John Coleman, Penny Werthner, Geoff Harris, and Sandeep Nandhra. There are many others to thank, but I wanted to personally mentioned these specific individuals.

I’m not a veteran but I do feel like I went to war for Canada 🇨🇦
6 months of reflection still has me feeling like a hero returning home. The battles were ugly, the terrain challenging, and the mental game required to keep going when you think you can’t, Enormous.

We went to war physically with the process planning from coaches @geoff800 @pennywerthner and @coach_prufer

We went to war technologically with help from @camosuninnovates and modified my racing chair repeatedly until we had one of lightest racing chairs in the world. We used the best functional components, had the best wheels with the best bearings, tires. I left for Paris feeling like most fit skater on the ice who also had the best equipment.
Confidence was achieved.

We went to war psychologically and I intentionally broke the world record 4 times during the qualification portion of the season. 400m (48.06) 800m (1:35.59)
I wanted my competition to be worried they didn’t have what it took to rival me. Not sure if I got in any heads but it didn’t matter. Focus was mostly about never competing with anyone else ever again. No opponents, just the challenge of being the best I can be and setting up the circumstances to support success.

We went to war with ourselves, coaches including. The question of if we were doing the right things had to be combat by the belief that we are capable of hiking the route we chose. We ignored the doubt and uncertainty that comes when approaching a near impossible task.

When it comes to racing, you can’t win before the finish line, but you can certainly loose at any point.
I remember thinking, Holy (insert language), Im in the lead, I’m about to win. And IMMEDIATELY had to bring myself back to the task at hand. Execute the plan. This then that. If this happens I’ll do that... No after party until the games done.

I went offline and controlled my emotional environments. Nothing in unless it helps. Unfortunately media makes me jelly sometimes and that’s not productive.

If you’re a competitor of mine, I welcome you to try my approach. Heck come train with me. Let’s see where the chips fall. See you in a few months 👀😉

Gratitude post: I’ve been teaching run skills for 20 years or so and have had the privilege of teaching people of all ages, levels and athletic backgrounds. When I look back, I can see how much I’ve evolved in my understanding of what and how I teach/coach all thanks to great mentors and coaches AND all the athletes I’ve worked with. I feel so lucky to do what I love and that I get to work with so many amazing athletes who I care about and who continue to help me grow as a coach!
