(NEW) A story about dead end youth? A Clockwork Orange was one of thee most rock n’ roll films ever produced. Help us celebrate this masterpiece!

When I was in foster care in the 1980s, my housemother Stella Okalue, who truly was momma for me, gave me the firm directive to write – not just to write, but to tell our story. Our group home of teens, who were wards of the state and had no place else to live, were facing the constant threat of eviction by neighbors. Stella understood the power of storytelling, its potential to persuade people to change the way they think. By the early ‘90s I’d left NYC for a fresh start in SF and hopefully to start a band. Although I was not a great singer, I had been writing songs and craved the collaboration of a band as opposed to the isolation of writing. Stella urged me to go back to school and write. You can change the world, she’d say, not joking. She believed in “her girls,” all of us who had a thick file that followed us through various placements and institutionalizations. But to Stella we were the ones who could make an impact because of all that we’d experienced, along with the healing and training we’d received – to tell stories that invited people to care about what they might not have considered before.

The group home I was in eventually was shut. We lost. It was heartbreaking. But Stella would always say, “They have to know what happened, who we are!” It took me too long to be able to write these stories in my own voice, as I have done now that I’m completing my memoir.

But back in my twenties, when I was writing the stories which would become The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, I wrote this song, Save the World, about my hope of finding another way to make an impact. I don’t really believe a story or a song can save the world. But I do know if one person connects, feels less alone, is empowered, then we are all stronger.

For many of us, to be an artist – in any form – is to battle society’s limitations on what is “allowed” or expected. I wrote Falling Down as a little affirmation of that continuous battle. We performed it live in 1993 on Stanford University’s @kzsu

Falling Down Lyrics
So here we’ve said all our goodbyes
to those who would stop us
to find what’s been lost on our way
it certainly won’t be found

here, now
why

So here we’re floating in mid-air
saying something is nothing
waiting to wake from a spell that finds us
falling down

This song captures the feeling of being my own worst enemy. Nobody could say or do anything worse than what I could to myself. An enemy is someone who we imagine wants to destroy us, and for my entire life I felt trapped inside, as my lyrics say, “in the outpost of the enemy.” I’ve always been in search of saving, of someone or something to rescue me from the quicksand of self-hate. But as they say, it’s all an inside job – the self-worth has to come from within. Writing has helped me integrate my severe dissociation, yes a form of DID. No one can rescue me, just as I cannot rescue anyone else. But we can talk about our experiences in the ways we are able, in whatever forms are achievable. And that connection with others works to dislodge the enemy from their outpost within us. XO LA

Lyrics
Have you heard what I found.
It’s tearing me apart, rippin me new ground
Have you seen what I found, it’s at my window.

Have you seen what it can do
Anything I love anything with you
Pulling me apart, unconcerned from the start
It’s at my window, it’s at my window.

Oh, it creeped right in,
Oh, inside my skin, oh I live within
the enemy

It’s at my window

Have you seen a rage so bold
Keeping me away causin’ me grow old
Has it been shot at you, its at my window

Have you tasted fear so close
What you want you hate the most
Making me the first, making me the worst
It’s at my window

I’ve tried to slit my skin, tried to fit right in
Tired of living within the enemy
It’s at my window

Wont you rescue me? Wont you dig right in
Trapped inside the
Outpost of the enemy
