This one easily could’ve made the “Fatality List,” but somehow it ended up as just an accident report 😅

It was my first ever flight from the Aiguille du Midi middle station. I took a conservative line - no proximity, nothing low - just a safe scout to get a feel for the area. I knew about the cable car lines, but I focused on them only during launch and completely forgot they’d be a factor during landing too.

The small, uphill LZ near the parking lot had my full attention. I got tunnel vision and locked in on the target. I was scanning treetops to stay altitude-aware, but otherwise blocking everything else out.

That focus cost me: I completely missed the cables. My wing flew straight into one, instantly shredding the lines (and likely the fabric - haven’t fully inspected it yet, but it’s probably toast).

I was around 40m up. No idea how I made it through. The wing collapsed instantly, and I threw my reserve right after impact - but when I hit the trees, it was still in the container. A second ground camera shows it eventually deployed, so I think branches, wing wreckage, and some reserve fabric all helped slow me down.

Huge shoutout to @highadventure.ch and the Beamer 3 Light - no doubt it changed the outcome. And my Smith Vantage helmet with MIPS tech took a beating but did its job. I never lost consciousness or even felt head pain - despite the fall and a few solid bounces off the ground 😅

Every bounce, I was just more amazed I was still alive and alert. My friends saw the crash, called the heli, and got to me fast - even before rescue arrived. Massive thanks to them for their quick action and support ❤️

And huge thanks to the rescue team and doctors for their fast, professional care. Sadly, I’ve got enough experience to know how much that matters 😅

Final verdict: broken femur, shoulder, four ribs, and a minor pneumothorax. All things considered… still feels like a miracle.

UPD: And five broken vertebrae that doctors didn’t notice on the first scan 😅

Key takeaways:
• Don’t get tunnel vision - keep situational awareness sharp
• Quality gear (helmet + fast-deploy reserve) is worth every cent
• And maybe… consider an airbag 🤷‍♂️
