#kootfest in it’s myriad forms from individual to collective. In its now 14th iteration, @aquaholic1553 shows expert organization and pure hearted motivation in partnership with the local paddling legend of the falls. Thanks to the OG inspiration of his brother, Jake Scott, Chaddleman, and others like Chey Aura; Koot Fest is still peaking.
While the original gatherings were small and contemporary versions are increasingly well attended, common threads persist and intertwine: the estimable flow of the mighty Kootenai River in the dry season, a sacred baptism of the falls in uncertain times, brave people that test and sharpen their skills for intangible reward and a precious, albeit momentary brake from the earthly plane, a community inspired by the freedom of unbridled nature.
Brave you say? Si, retorts me. While, the river and fest offers so many clean, classy lines; it also offers the chance to brake yourself and others. We are; therefore, given the great gift of the decision making that at its most dramatic puts our very earthly existence on the line. No wonder we so hardily celebrate before we more conscientiously evaporate into well earned sleep.
Who was the first Kutenai ancestor to swim across to the island? Who ran the first boat over the falls? What motivated Fletcher, Lucero, Jaime Simon, Marr/ Byrd/D Meyers, the Sipple Brothers to search for different lines. When will the “China Entrance” connect the most inaccessible dots? With any luck, time will tell.
Many thanks to @luksipp and @aurarogers for the lovely images and the Bozeman boaters and my bro Jude for the new to me sends🫎
