“You can’t put a price tag on purpose, happiness, and peace.” – Mike Sweetney It has taken me a while to put this into words. I’m still not sure I’ve found the right ones. Mike passed away a few days ago at just 43. We were at Georgetown together, and I watched him become a force in the Big East. What I will remember most is the day he sat down with me for the ninth episode of Leaving the Pack. He could have kept that conversation about basketball. There was the dominance at Georgetown, the draft night, and the NBA. Instead, he chose to talk about the harder parts. He spoke about losing his father. He spoke about suffering in silence while the world was watching. He shared that, alone in a Cleveland hotel room, he came close to taking his own life. Then he spoke about what it took to turn that pain into purpose and advocacy. That took real courage. Being strong on the court is one thing. Being honest about the moments you didn’t feel strong at all is another. Mike got tired of his truth not being out there, so he told it. Then he kept telling it in schools and at corporate events. He said out loud what so many people carry quietly, so someone else might feel less alone. He redefined strength for so many people, including me. Mike once thought his purpose was to be a basketball player. Instead, he found it in helping save and change lives. He said he had more purpose, happiness, and joy in that work than he ever had playing the game. Through all of it, he stayed gentle. He was big in stature and even bigger in heart. He made you feel like your story mattered too. This is a loss we will all feel. The Georgetown family, the basketball world, and everyone his honesty reached will feel it. Most of all, his family and his children have lost their gentle giant. My heart is with them. He spent so much of his life searching for peace and helping others find it too. If there is anything I hope for him now, it is that he has finally found it. I am grateful he trusted me with his story, and I am honored to keep sharing it. Rest in purpose, Mike.
