IncarcerNation may have closed, but the conversation keeps going.

One of the most talked-about works in the show was Georgie Mattingley’s The New World (2021). In this three-channel video installation, staff undergo training in a dystopian gated institution — a sinister-kitsch world of power, punishment and feeling. The Mparntwe/Alice Springs-based artist made the film after a period working inside a high-security prison, using an imagined new world to hold the most tormenting and most human moments she witnessed there.

Hanging in the same space is her hand-tinted black-and-white photograph of Don Dale Youth Detention Centre in a state of neglect.

The photos are in, the gallery is open. We appreciate everyone who turned up on Tuesday night for the launch of ‘IncarcerNation’.

We were honoured to have Gary Lee welcome us to his Country with stories of his childhood in Parap, before Ben Grimes, CEO of NAAJA, and Rocket Bretherton from the Justice Reform Initiative opened the exhibition.

Huge thanks to all the artists without whom this exhibition would never have existed.

And big ups to NCCA Board, staff and volunteers who help amplify these important narratives through their work.

Installation shots of the group exhibition Séance @gallerygalleryinc.

Séance presents a dialogue between different artistic practices that engage with invisibility, elevation, and the body’s withdrawal. Through this conversation, it explores the unseen as a generative presence — an unstable site where memory, spirit, and image intersect.
The exhibition concept is inspired by early photographic experiments that sought to capture what exists beyond the limits of perception. Drawing on the history of séance photography and Georges Méliès’ pioneering cinematic illusions — such as The Vanishing Lady (1896) and The Man with the Rubber Head (1901) — the exhibition brings together works that use tricks, manipulations, and strategies of staging to suggest the presence of what cannot be seen.
