We were excited to return to the DYD Built by Us Youth Summit, where our Teaching Artists, alumni, and a supporting artist led five DJ stations, connecting young people through music and creativity! 🎧

The students from Compton High School made it clear that artistry is a big part of their lives, especially with their school having its own music studio. As we connected through music and shared our ears, students also played some of their own original music, giving us a chance to hear their creativity and talent firsthand.

Thank you @lacountyyouth for inviting us back!

Graduation day at California Institution for Women was filled with pride, joy, and a whole lot of music. 🎓🎶 Participants performed their DJ sets with their own style and expression, dancing and cheering each other on as they celebrated completing the Prison Electronic Music Program.

For Franchune, graduation opened a door to what could come next. After hearing how much she had learned, her brother, who owns a recording studio, encouraged her to pursue DJing after release and perform at his events.

Jessica shared that every Tuesday morning, when our class took place, she felt like she wasn’t in prison. For those few hours each week, she said she felt human again.

Six weeks of creativity, connection, and learning, with an impact that can reach far beyond the classroom. 🧡

10’s across the board🔥🎶

Had an unforgettable time playing at the truly extravagant @houseofyes for Heat Wave in NYC. @iambridgeet and I threw down for our first B2B together and had way too much fun doing it. ❤️

Much love to Bridget, @theegyptianlover, the @houseofyes crew, and everyone who came out and made the night so special. Legendary night, legendary energy, and one for the books. 👏

And if you missed the B2B, you can catch the mix on @deepspaceradio next Saturday from 5–7 PM ET. 🎧🔥

Thanks to @cfranksoriginal for my outfit! ✨

Six years ago today, Geri was released from California Institution for Women. This May, she returned as @gerifreee.

She came back as a Teaching Artist with her mentor and co-Teaching Artist @spinorita by her side — the same woman who has guided her since she first joined our “On a New Track” Reentry Mentoring Program.

💬 “Returning to CIW was one of the most surreal experiences of my life,” Geri shared. “I returned not as my past, but as the woman I have become.”

This is a milestone for Geri, and for Give a Beat. Supporting alumni with skills they can build on and pathways back into the community is exactly what we’re here for.

Read what that day meant to her, in her own words. Visit our bio.

This Juneteenth, we’re not just celebrating freedom — we’re feeling it.

Join Give a Beat in supporting a very special event produced by Give a Beat teaching artist and program graduate Daniel Mast.

Sounds of Freedom: A Juneteenth Cultural Experience is happening this Friday, June 19th at Eugene’s on Pico, 4PM–11PM. Live bands, open mic, DJing by geriFree, music production workshop, a community chess tournament, Juneteenth buffet, happy hour, and vinyl on the patio.

Because creativity is a form of liberation — and this is a space where artists, neighbors, organizers, and creatives come together in expression, connection, and purpose.

Give a Beat is hosting “Crate Digging for Freedom” on the patio. If you have vinyl at home to contribute, please drop off after 4pm any day this week before the event on Friday.

Hope you can hear. Freedom you can feel.
