Very excited to celebrate Jasmine Cooper’s forthcoming monograph on 23 06, Selwyn College, Quarry Whitehouse Auditorium, 1 pm 🥂🥂

Jasmine is the Fairlie-Hutchinson Research Fellow in French at Girton College, University of Cambridge. Her current research explores intersectional rage in contemporary francophone women’s writing and visual arts, focusing on the revolutionary and decolonial potential of women’s anger in the last decade. Her first monograph, ‘An End in Herself: Non-motherhood in Contemporary French Women’s Writing, is forthcoming with Liverpool University Press (2026). In this work, she examines literary representations of non-motherhood by French and francophone authors.

“In this talk, I draw from the early parts of this monograph. The book’s purpose is a confrontation, encounter, and negotiation of questions of reproduction and how the non/desire for children operates in the twenty-first century. Specifically how literary representations refuse the logic of fungibility which collapse non-mothers into a monolithic and often mythologised anti-woman, anti-female figure, even among so-called feminists. I argue that discourses which uphold maternity as both typifying the ethical relation and zenith of idealised femininity occlude alternative bodies and lived experiences from view, as well as circumscribing female subjectivity within deeply normative parameters. Kirstin Wilson rightly states that the childless woman is a woman who disrupts her prescribed role, who does not fit, who must be repaired, pitied or, at least, explained’. It is not my intention to explain childlessness or the non-mothers who populate the texts at the heart of their discussion. But what might emerge from this study is a fuller sense of what a life without children - whether chosen or not chosen, or somewhere in between - means having to negotiate, and how literary representations might trouble, challenge and reframe not only the categories of Woman and Mother, but also rewrite the fictionalisation of the body itself. I am guided, in particular, by Sheila Heti’s envisaging of female subjectivity, in non-productive terms, as ‘an end in itself’… “

I am very excited to announce this event with Şeyda Kurt where I will be in conversation with her about her book ‘Hate. The Uses of a Powerful Emotion’ (Verso, 2025).

Şeyda‘s bestselling book offers an ideal entry point into discussing a myriad of topics relevant to German studies, connecting philosophy, German history and contemporary politics. Drawing on a vast range of philosophical and literary texts on hate from Aristotle to S. Yizhar, Kurt traces the many meanings and forms that hate takes, and suggests strategies in which it can be epistemologically constructive. A particular focus of the conversation will be on the essayistic form of Kurt’s philosophical text, and the English translation.

The event will take place in English on 27 April 2026 at Murray Edwards College in the Fellow’s Drawing Room (FDR) at 5 PM, and Online. Please note that the registration for online tickets will close on 24th April, and the link to Zoom will be sent to your email the same day.

Jackie de Pont’s English translation of Şeyda Kurt’s book Hass. Von der Macht eines widerständigen Gefühls (Harper Collins, 2023), was published by Verso in 2025.

The conversation and the Q&A will be followed by informal drinks and canapés for in-person attendees, and the opportunity to get your copy signed by the author.

Tickets are free but have to booked here:

In Other Wor(l)ds: Travelling through Translation

“We’re about to embark on an epic journey across the world’s fiction, travelling paths forged by the magic of translation” (Natasha Brown)

Join us for an evening of word theatre and discussion on the topic of travelling through translation.

Music will be provided by the Inter Alios choir, interspersed with performed readings of literature in translation, all reflecting the theme of travel in its broadest sense and providing context for a discussion with Natasha Brown, author of the multi-prizewinning novel Assembly (2021) and the Booker-longlisted Universality (2025) in her role as Chair of the International Booker Prize jury, and Professor Duncan Large, former director of the British Centre for Literary Translation. There will be space for audience questions.

In Other Wor(l)ds is a collaboration between the Cambridge research team for the EU Horizon/UKRI project ‘The Cartography of the Political Novel in Europe’ (www.caponeu.eu), the Inter Alios choir of Churchill and Murray Edwards Colleges, directed by Dr Ewan Campbell, and the In Other Words project (www.inotherwordsbooks.co.uk/) of Tills Bookshop in Edinburgh.

We are so excited to present this term’s CPSJ talks!

23 January

Dr Rim Irscheid (KCL)
“Archives of Feeling: Socially Engaged Archival Art and the Palestine Solidarity Movement in the UK”
Selwyn College Cambridge, Walter’s Room 1-2 pm

What is the role of art in social justice movements? In this performance-based talk, ethnomusicologist, curator and multidisciplinary artist Rim Irscheid will discuss her recent textile installation Mapping Resistance (2025). Guided by ethnographic research into diaspora archival art that makes space for speculative histories, the talk will look into the role of ‘feeling’ in guiding institutional critique in the arts. Looking at creative responses to institutional silencing in contemporary sound and media art from the SWANA (Southwest Asia and North Africa) region, imaginations of a collective affect are considered crucial in shaping the experiences and outcomes of socially engaged art practices.

20 February

Dr German Primera (Univ. of Brighton)

“The Politics of Refusal”

HYBRID: Selwyn College Cambridge, Chadwick Room and Zoom (email us for the link if you’re interested)

This talk examines the politics of refusal through the lens of improvisation in Black social life. It challenges the idea that Black existence can only be understood in terms of negation, exclusion, or social death, and instead shows how improvisation functions as a distinctive form of political practice. Refusal, in this account, is not simply resistance to power or an attempt to escape domination, but a way of living and acting within its constraints without being fully captured by them. Drawing on debates between Afropessimism and Black Omptimism, the talk explores how fugitive and improvisational practices unsettle linear ideas of time, progress, and political resolution. Improvisation appears here as an ongoing, everyday practice that disrupts established political categories and opens space for forms of social life that are not organised around recognition, closure, or emancipation. Refusal, then, is not a dramatic break or final rupture, but a continuous reworking of the conditions under which life is lived.

Our Removes German Pupils are loving participating in the @germanatcambridge @cambridgeuniversity Adopt-A- Class scheme 🇩🇪

We are paired with Third Year Student Miranda Addy, who is currently completing her Year Abroad in Leipzig. Pupils are enjoying asking Miranda questions and finding out more about life in Germany, and Miranda’s experience studying German.

They rose to her challenge of naming Germany’s neighbouring countries with great gusto! 🌍

25 years, 25 films. Rare air.
Grateful for the platform and the friends I’ve made; not just good people, but scholars whose work shows the ripple effect as ideas become projects that travel beyond the academy. My piece asks a simple question of technology: who does it serve?
That’s Faust Shop—audience-led, site-specific performance as a lab for the future. 3.0 → soon. In generous company across science, policy, and the arts. #gatescambridge25 #gatescambridge #artandai #technology #creativetech #performance
