POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Today I presented my paper, “Beyond the Tournament: Community Football and Youth Participation in Roysambu, Nairobi,” at the University of Nairobi Physical Education and Sports Science Conference.📝⚽️

When I started documenting the Roysambu Ballers League, I wanted to look beyond whether we simply had a good tournament and ask harder questions:

Who participated? What does free community sport actually cost? What worked? What didn’t? And what would it take to make grassroots football more sustainable? 🤔💭

This came from real work, real people and plenty of lessons along the way.

And it wasn’t built by me alone. Thank you to everyone from @tujitumetuinuemtaa , the volunteers, teams, players, spectators and everyone who contributed time, resources and ideas. You gave me something worth documenting and learning from. 🙏🏿🙏🏿

I also left today’s conference with plenty more to think about.

Prof. Janet Mathai’s presentation on the role of grassroots coaches in fostering clean sport among young athletes particularly stood out to me. It reinforced something I’ve increasingly been thinking about through my own conversations with coaches in Roysambu: people working on the ground possess knowledge that policy cannot afford to ignore. Her paper was part of today’s conference programme alongside research across sport, physical education and athlete wellbeing.
At the same time, practitioners need researchers too … people who can test our assumptions, challenge what we think we know, help us measure properly and turn experience into actionable recommendations.

Good policy needs the people doing the work and the people studying the work to actually talk to each other.🫱🏾‍🫲🏽🤝

For Roysambu and Nairobi, that means moving beyond statements like “support youth” or “build sports facilities.”

We should be asking:

What exactly is needed? What does the evidence say? Who is responsible? What is workable? And how will we know whether it actually worked?

A week of learning, mentorship, growth, and fun came to a beautiful end 🎓✨

Watching the students confidently share what they learned reminded us why programs like these matter. Thank you to the school administration, parents, partners, volunteers, and students for making it all possible ❤️
