Still taking in what an honor it was to host last week’s celebration of The HUG Act at our new Echo Park housing site—made possible through the generosity and support of Supervisor Hilda Solis. ❤️

The HUG Act made history as the first bill in the nation written by incarcerated youth. Before its passage, something as simple and human as hugging your mom or dad during a visit could result in losing contact visits altogether and being forced to visit behind plexiglass.
These young people decided that needed to change.

And this celebration was especially meaningful for us because two of the incredible young men who helped turn that idea into legislation and get the HUG Act all the way to Governor Newsom’s desk now call our Echo Park site home. 🥹❤️

That’s what made this night so special. We weren’t just celebrating a bill. We were celebrating young people who used their voices, their lived experiences, and their leadership to change a system…and make history in the process.

So much love and respect to everyone who stood alongside them on this journey, including Assemblymember Isaac Bryan @ib2_real , Hoops 4 Justice @hoops4justice , Urban Peace Institute @urbanpeaceinstitute , HODG @hangoutdogood , Liberty Hill Foundation @libertyhillfoundation , and so many others who believed in the power of youth advocacy.

And because a historic moment deserves a beautiful celebration…

🔥 Santina Rose Events @ms.santinarose pulled the entire décor together in just FOUR DAYS
💐 Dominic @floralbydom brought the space to life with the beautiful florals
🎶 Current Core @thecurrentcore & @benniedotstudio set the vibe with lighting and sound. 🎥brilliantly captured by @sickofbeingfamous
👨🏿‍🍳 And LA Room & Board’s super-dope culinary team did what they ALWAYS do—put incredible food on the table.

But the night belonged to the young people.

From incarceration to legislation. From being impacted by the system to changing it.

That’s history. 🦾🙏🏿🔥❤️

WELCOME HOME, Lawrence Bowie!! 🥳🖤 On the final day of Black History Month, we honor and celebrate Black youth and their families who are fighting for their freedom, human rights and prosperous futures. ✊🏿✊🏽

Lawrence was incarcerated at the age of 16, released at 25. We recently won his fitness hearing and last week, Lawrence came to Chuco’s Justice Center and sat at the judges bench 🔥. He is passionate about policy advocacy and youth organizing ✨

Lawrence is one of the co-authors of two CA state legislative bills created by kids in Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall-AB 1646 (Hug Act) and AB 1647 (Juvenile Potential Protection Act). 👏🏿👏🏽

Lawrence is a kind soul and definitely an advocate for himself and others-we’re very proud to see him out and living his best life! 🫶🏿🫶🏽
