This past weekend a group of local growers joined us at @umthombotrust to learn from our guest facilitator Kate from @greenheartedprojects about all things agroforestry or as other local farmers @welliamorganics had named theirs - a KOS BOS! There is something so magical that happens when people come together to learn, share and put their hands in the soil together. We planted a large agroforestry system in the corner of the allotment garden in the hopes of the abundance of fruit feeding some of the youth that comes to the farm. Gardening is so much more than a physical act, we discussed land, mental health, purpose and access to resources and once again all left feeling deeply inspired to grow on. A massive thank you to Kate for your brilliant teaching, Umthombo funders (Jose’s and @recorrauk ) for helping us gather all the resources we needed, Farmer Kobus and Farmer Erin who helped me(Layla) prepare for the course, Farmer Daniel for the woodchip runs, Farmer Jake from Valley Chickens for sharing tractor knowledge, Alex from Homtini for all his hard work, @getdirtyza for the epic broad fork that always comes in handy and @welliamorganics for the donation of trees and for inspiring it in the first place! And every person on the course who added their love, sweat and tears to the land.

5 Things to Consider Before Starting a Veggie Garden! 1. Sunlight – Most veggies need 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. 2. Healthy soil – Good soil means healthy plants! Add compost and organic matter. 3. Water – Make sure you have easy access to water and mulch to retain moisture. 4. Plant what you eat – Choose veggies your family enjoys and that suit the season. 5. Start small – You don't need a huge space! A few containers or one raised bed is a great start. Remember, you don't need a perfect garden to get started. Start small, make mistakes, learn and grow! The right tool really does make all the difference! As we continue building our no-till flower farm, we’re learning that investing in quality tools saves an incredible amount of time and effort. This broadfork from @getdirtyza has quickly become one of our favourite tools. It loosens and aerates the soil without turning it over, preserving soil structure and the life beneath the surface—exactly what regenerative farming is all about. In no time at all we prepared this 30-metre bed, added our well-aged goat manure, and sowed it with a winter cover crop of field peas and Dunnart oats. What to Grow in June June is a fantastic month to sow and plant cool-season crops. Direct sow carrots, beetroot, radishes, turnips, peas, and broad beans straight into the garden. If you're looking for leafy greens, lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, and rocket will keep your harvest basket full through winter. Now is also the perfect time to plant brassicas. Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, and Brussels sprouts can all go into the garden as seedlings and will reward you with delicious harvests in the months ahead. Don't forget the herbs! Parsley, coriander, chives, and dill thrive in the cooler weather and add wonderful flavour to winter meals.
