Happy birthday to my little brother @getinsome !! You have accomplished so much in such a short time. I’m so proud of everything you’ve done and who you’ve become. A stoner, hippie, healer, marathon running, businessman, but most of all the best dad ever to my nephew, and my best friend ❤️❤️❤️
I love you so much gooba. I hope you have an amazing day, cuz you deserve it. Thank you for being you.

🎶 Shout out to September babies, whoo whoo! 🎶

Four years ago I stepped onto the Chamberlin Ranch for my first time. Still young on the trail running scene, mind malleable as far as what it thought being a “runner” meant, I quickly learned that my working definition was…incomplete. Over the course of the next 3.5 days, I found myself gradually erasing my working understanding, and by the end of the weekend I had a mostly blank canvas.

The faint imprint of how I originally viewed running is still there, and I am okay with this. Markings like this are reminders of where you’ve been, evidence that you didn’t remain in one place.

My old view of a runner used to be something in the superficial realm of “someone who is able to run a long distance, is thin, and has a visible six pack.”

Those words honestly make me cringe. Thank god for time, the elements and people that come with it, and maturity.

I quickly realized that definition excluded a lot of aspects - incredible humans, the environment, nature, culture.

Most runners aren’t sponsored, will never have notoriety, will never be celebrated in the way of accolades. But accolades are an arbitrary societal creation. This is not to say we should do away with races - they bring together the communities that running has cultivated.

But places like the Chamberlin Ranch are necessary to remind ourselves why we run. At Born to Run, yes there are races, and there are awards. But anyone who comes here understands that PR’s are not what running is about.

At this oasis, we celebrate the soul of Trail Running herself. With the blessings and presence of the Copper Canyons’ indigenous Tarahumara, we are reminded that our connection with the earth is born in our hearts and feet as they run through grass, dirt and trees, over and under rock, beneath the sky and her sun, clouds, and stars. We run because, through evolution, elements congealed in specific patterns that gave us a skeleton, muscles, and nervous system to guide each individual myocycte and osteocyte.

After four years, I see how deep the roots are running. This particular year was a different pace, but even existed differently this time, it still offered something the previous years did not.
