1996 Weekly Shonen Jump Vol. 41 | BGS 6.5 🏴‍☠️

A historic collectible featuring Romance Dawn, Eiichiro Oda’s second prototype of One Piece, following the first in the 1996 Summer Special.

This Jump Volume contains a 45-page, full-colour featuring Oda’s second iteration/prototype of the One Piece Manga.

This is the first appearance of Luffy on a Shonen Jump Cover.

In this prototype- Garp is a pirate who inspires Luffy to become a pirate and gives him the Straw Hat & the devil fruit. Ann, a blue-haired girl is Luffy’s companion. Shanks, who appeared in Version 1, is absent here.

The prototype also introduces 2 types of Pirates: Peace Mains, adventurers who protect people and fight bad pirates, and Morganias, pirates who plunder and steal.

Oda Had titled this as “Romance Dawn” before he thought of the title “One Piece”. “Romance” draws from an archaic meaning associated with chivalry, wonder, and grand adventure, while “Dawn” represents the beginning of a journey. Oda loved the phrase so much that he reused Romance Dawn as the title of One Piece’s first chapter, first volume, and first story arc.

Oda also left a comment on the last page of the Jump issue, his first comment in Weekly Shônen Jump ever:
“Woohoo!! So this is Jump! This is such a great feeling! I would love to hear your impressions!”

Garage Con 2026 was a hit! Huge thank you to @frankthecomicguy for letting me join you. I was curious to see how 1st printing manga and manga zasshis would do at a comic event. It started slow, with everyone swarming the comic tables while barely looking through my stuff.. it wasn't until the middle of the sale that the manga people started showing up and really buying my stuff up.

What I learned is that zasshis are still a very niche market in the States. Your average collector understands comics and knows what to look for and has plenty of price references. With zasshis, there isn't much to compare prices to, so people are understandably hesitant to buy something they don't fully understand.

The funny part is I've been collecting zasshis for years, back when hardly anyone cared about them. Now, I'm finally starting to see more interest in the States.

There's still a lot of education needed, but I'm glad I got the chance to put this stuff in front of people and introduce more collectors to something I've been passionate about for years.
