Today I’ve just completed the type of work that I’ve been building to for years, spending most all of my energy and savings trying to achieve, fallen down multiple times along the way even been given multiple opportunities to do it cheaper , faster or to a lesser quality but I have been resolute, even blindly stubborn as to how I want my work to be to created and seen in the world. In spite of all of my levels of self doubt I simply kept trudging toward a place that I didn’t even know existed, let alone imagine ever arriving.
This morning whilst dry mounting this fibre based silver gelatin print from an 8x10 negative and placing a matte around it I quietly realised to myself I am here, no fanfare, no champagne, no hug from the girl I lost whilst losing myself trying to achieve this goal. Just one of those moments you’ve been dreaming of for so long you didn’t even recognise it whilst it was staring you back in the face. Has anything changed within in me, is anything different? No, not really, I think the best thing I could say is I just was able to love myself a little tiny bit more than not at all for turning a dream into a reality.

This is a portrait of @paul_fluffy_sinclair taken in my @halfartstudio on my 1950’s Deardorff V8 large format camera, developed and printed in my darkroom and soon to be on the wall of the @thevoyagertavern in Stuart’s Point. A very cool place that like me is going against the grain of what the world seems to be sliding towards and just saying no to faster ,cheaper, crapper and yes to this is just better and returning to a way it use to be. I look forward to visiting and seeing it hanging on the wall.

That’s a bit of a long rant but I just found myself awash with all sorts of lovely feelings I wanted to share incase anyone else is out there chasing a dream that seems to have no clear place to be realised, just keep going, don’t listen to anyone or anything but your heart.

I landed in LA almost 15 years ago, straight into this magic piece of land that back then belonged to my friend @abirdinla ‘s compound. She told me, “Stay here for a bit and see if you like it, and if you wanna find a place in the Canyon.”
I liked it so much I never left.

So many things happened here.

If you are reading this, there’s a 50% chance you were at one of the crazy parties that became legendary. But there were also the asados, the hikes, the late-night walks to the trampoline, the women’s groups, the outdoor film nights, the telescope sessions…

This was the place where any friend could show up anytime and everyone was always welcome. @andy_muschietti would always bring toys and instruments, martindethurah would just show up with his tent even if I was out of town. @sokothecat would drop by with the coolest people in the world, like @angiecepeda and @ana.maria.hermida.s , who became my besties.

This was the place where anyone could plan a birthday, an event, or a last-minute gathering. A truly open house for all of us newbies in town needing to build a new family.

Remember @caverdaisy ‘s birthday when @tamara__arias (who was the trailer’s guardian) broke her leg jumping on the trampoline, and @wabizabi saved the day—and the helicopter rescue fee—with his truck? 😂There’s no room here to tell all the stories or name everybody.

I lived so many lives here.
Many of them alone, and through incredible transformations. Always surrounded and held by the most wonderful friendships, and for the last 6 years, hand in hand with Shane, my love.

The Eden garden Shane and I planted stays to tell all our stories in every fruit it will continue to bear. Definitely a life lived to the full here.

I’ll miss this mountain so much. But we are bringing all the magic with us to our new home in the desert, and it’s going to be even better. Only one hour further, but more acres, more rooms, more stars. We are so in love with @theranchomorongo and can’t wait to see you there for more parties, more stargazing, more stories by the fire, more Argentinean meat, and all of it all over again. (Also maybe some aliens.)

Goodbye @blackfishcoffeecrescenthead I can’t help but feel sad that one of my favourite places to sit and watch the world go by with my dog at my feet eating the bacon from my ‘choose your own breakfast fry up’ is no longer here. Thank you to @min.the.bin for inadvertently getting me to drink cappuccino’s, thank you to @jordsmorse for always keeping it real, I was quietly proud you called me by my name after more than two years, you needed to earn your stripes here, this was no instagram story fluff cafe this was where you went to feel at home, this was always full of locals and when I think of Crescent Head, Blackfish is part of that thought. I may well have got the last coffee before they closed the doors, just before I took this photo. As I was driving out of town I had a thought that it was all of the women that worked their butts off there that made blackfish what it was, so I turned around and asked to take each of their portraits, just as I did @bhakti_quinn_ also arrived, it all seemed to fit perfectly. Thank you @ericabe11is for all the memories and making @blackfishcoffeecrescenthead the institution it was, you’ll be sorely missed ❤️

Here’s Charlie of @vulcan_leather_and_brass May21/5/26.
If you know me, you know I’m happiest when im shooting film. I love this stuff so much for all the same reasons Charlie loves working with his hands creating with leather and brass. These things have historical significance, these things are made to last, these things take time, and these things are made with love and we’re both out here in Fredrickton at @oldcheesefactorycollective working at keeping these practices alive because it’s worth supporting people hand making things they love . You may be able to buy things cheaper but they won’t be better and they won’t last as long.
Come visit something true and real and help support local artists making things the old school way before we all forget how to use our imagination and create things from our hearts with our hands and spend less time on these screens. ❤️
