That post-rain golden hour glow ✨🌅 This is Emily and Eddie up on the hill behind Valley Oaks Wedding Venue, after a full August day of rain rolling through in waves. By sunset the sky had cleared out completely, so we slipped away from the party for a few quiet minutes. I tell every couple to hold back fifteen or twenty minutes for sunset, and these two are my case study. No guests, no schedule, just a breather and a chance to actually talk to each other for the first time since the ceremony. Eddie calls himself an introvert, so a little escape from the crowd was the move. The reception will still be there when you get back, I promise 💛 Behind the lens: rain-washed air is a gift. The haze gets knocked right out, so the light goes clean, soft, and gold in a way I honestly can't fake in editing. I put the sun behind them and let it flare in from the corner, which lights up her hair and veil and keeps their faces evenly lit. After a gray day, it felt like the sky was making it up to us 📸 Who else spotted the ink on Emily's arm? Which piece of that sleeve is your favorite? 🌿 . That dress deserved its own weather system. 🌸✨ Maggie and Brandon at the Glendale Lyceum in Cincinnati, back in October 2024, catching the last of the golden light behind the tennis courts. Maggie skipped traditional white entirely and went with a gown hand dyed in swirls of pink and purple. When a dress has that much movement built into it, my job is mostly to give it room to fly and then get out of the way. Which is why I backed up, put them small in the frame, and let that treeline do the glowing. Worth remembering: this venue was Plan B. Their original spot went bankrupt in the spring, and the Lyceum had exactly one fall date left. Theirs. By the end of the night I got to tell them it photographed better than the original pick, and nobody argued. 🎉 Their full gallery is on the blog. Link in bio! . Stealing away from your own reception to get in a canoe. Iconic. 🛶✨ Brooke and Jacob at Sunset Ridge Wedding Venue in Wellington, back in July 2024. The reception was in full swing and they slipped out to the lake for a few quiet minutes. I love a couple that prioritizes the experience of the day over a rigid schedule. Ten minutes away from the party bought them a moment they'll actually remember, and it bought me this. Behind the lens: I shot this one from slightly above and off to the side so the water filled the whole frame behind them, no horizon, no distractions. The light at that hour was soft enough that their faces held all the contrast on their own, which is exactly why it went black and white. Color would have just been pretty. 📸 The best wedding photos usually happen when nobody's looking for the camera. . Some of y’all are spending THOUSANDS trying to look like a successful business owner instead of building a business that actually makes MONEY. I said what I said. 💅🏽 When I built my first six-figure business within 2 years, I didn’t have a fancy website or business cards. What I DID have was a way to get seen, a system to get paid, and a client experience that had people coming back AND sending their friends. Here’s what I learned: A pretty brand doesn’t pay the bills. A profitable business does. 💰 And the foundation of that? MARKETING, SALES & SYSTEMS. These are the three pillars I teach inside Business Church because I want women building businesses that are not only profitable but SUSTAINABLE. This quarter, we’re going ALL IN on systems because you cannot scale what you haven’t built properly. 🚨 Business Church doors open NEXT WEEK, October 12th! If you’re ready to stop winging it and start building a business that actually works for you, comment MEMBERSHIP and I’ll send you the link to join the waitlist so you don’t miss out !

Eyes down, hands clasped, no idea what's coming. 😅 Russell waiting on his first look with Laura at the Thoroughbred Center last October, with her walking up behind him in the blur. Laura ran an entire circuit of reveals instead of one first look: the bridesmaids, an emotional one with her dad, Kaiser the German Shepherd, and the groomsmen, who got handed Smirnoff Ices she'd hidden under her dress. So when I say nobody standing in this spot knew what they were in for, I mean it. Behind the lens: I shot this from behind a shrub on purpose. Keeping Laura soft and small in the background and Russell sharp against that white brick is what makes the frame feel like waiting. Converted to black and white because the flat overcast light gave me nothing better to do with color, and honestly the expression carries it. 📸 What would you have him do, keep the eyes closed or peek? 👀 . Artwork Collective 2.0 is officially live!! For years Artwork Collective was built specifically for higher-end wedding photographers. We’ve sold more than $3 million in artwork and albums but we were turning away more than 95% of the photographers who reached out to us. About a year ago we started the process to change that. We hired a software developer. We brought in designers and people who understand consumer buying. We rebuilt the entire experience around one goal: make artwork accessible for every photographer! Photographers already have to wear every hat. Photographer. Editor. Marketer. Customer service. Salesperson. We wanted to take one of those hats off your plate. Now it doesn’t matter if you shoot weddings, families, seniors, newborns or something else. You deliver the gallery. We sell the artwork. We don’t care if you have 3 sessions booked or 300 sessions booked. We GOT YOU! Everything is white-labeled to your brand. Your clients get a custom landing page with your logo. The experience is intentionally low pressure. We ask questions. We show them what’s possible. We help them choose what they actually want. Artwork starts at $249 and photographers also get $100 in artwork credit to give their clients. The first 3 months are free. After that it’s ONLY $7/month. The goal is simple. Help photographers offer more value. Elevate their brand. Stand out. Book more of the right clients. And do it without adding another job to their plate. Artwork Collective 2.0 is here. Go check it out! Link in bio!

Tie duty. Serious business. 🤵 Brandon getting the last adjustments before his Evans Orchard wedding to Melly, back in October 2024 in Georgetown. Two people, zero words, full concentration. Funny thing is, this almost happened somewhere else entirely. The plan was getting-ready photos in the silo, until we found a whole committee of wasps had claimed it first. The Evans Orchard team went full wasp-fighting superhero mode, nobody got stung, and we kept right on shooting. 🐝 Shot by Kristen Ellis, who converted this one to black and white for a reason. The room had a lot of competing tones going on, and stripping the color out puts all the weight on the hands and the faces. That's the whole photo right there. Getting-ready coverage gets skipped more than it should. These quiet ten minutes are usually where the day's best frames are hiding. 📸 What's one small pre-ceremony moment from your day you're glad someone caught? . Because having them join us for a weekend in cottage country wasn’t enough. 🏕️ Because 4 swoon-worthy sessions to add to their portfolio wasn’t all we wanted to give them. Or 3 customized education sessions to the photographers in the room so they can level up faster. We made sure they each walked away with awesome goodies and our friends from @freedomprintlab.io @getsproutstudio and @honeygrove_crafts all stepped up to make sure the bags were filled to the brim! We also wanted to make sure the girls felt cozy and gifted them with the best hoodies from @coastalreign #photographereducation #photographercommunity #swagbagsponsors #photographycommunity #motherclickersretreat

Wedding planning comes with a lot of questions, especially when it comes to choosing your photographer. Over the years, I’ve noticed that couples tend to ask the same questions before they book, so I put together this post to answer the biggest ones all in one place. Inside, you’ll find answers to questions like: • What it’s like to work with me • My documentary approach • What happens if you’re awkward in front of the camera • Pricing and what’s included • Gallery delivery • Backup equipment • And much more. Whether you’re just starting your search or narrowing down your options, I hope this gives you a little more clarity and confidence. Have a question I didn’t answer? Drop it in the comments or send me a DM. I’m always happy to help. Save this post for later or share it with someone who’s recently engaged 🚩 #faq #sacramentoweddingphotographer #destinationweddingphotographer #documentaryweddingphotographer #courtlandphotographyllc

Golden hour did the absolute most for these two. ✨ Maggie and Brandon, tucked into the grove behind the tennis courts at the Glendale Lyceum, on their October wedding day back in 2024. That grove is the whole reason this venue worked. Maggie and Brandon lost their original venue to bankruptcy months before the wedding, and the Lyceum had exactly one fall date left: theirs. No pool jump finale like they'd planned, but I'd trade a pool jump for this light any day of the week. And the dress. Hand-dyed in pink and purple because Maggie looked at the racks of white and decided the party needed color. In that low sun the ombre reads like it was designed to match the leaves. 💛 Behind the lens: I shot through a gap in the foliage to frame them, long lens wide open, exposing for the backlit highlights and letting the foreground fall into shadow. The sun was behind the trees doing all the rim light work for free. 📸 What color would you dye a wedding dress if the rules were only suggestions? . No shoulder tap. No garden crowd. Just Jason walking up the stairs. ✨ Sarah and Jason skipped the theatrical first look entirely at their Rose Hill Inn wedding in Versailles. She got ready in one of the light-filled historic suites upstairs, and when it was time, he just came to her. This frame is what happened right after: her hand in his hair, both of them somewhere between a laugh and a deep breath. That's the whole argument for an intimate day right there. No 200-person seating chart, no cousins peeking through the blinds, so the moment gets to be as goofy and as heavy as it actually feels. Behind the lens: I put them right against those tall windows and let that big soft sidelight do all the work. Metered for their faces, let the curtains and the trees outside blow out. When the room gives you light like that, you don't add a thing to it. Did you two do a first look, or walk in together? 💛 . Purple, yellow, and a whole lot of laughing 💛 Crystal and her crew in the grove at The Farmstead at Shawnee Springs in Harrodsburg, back in May 2024. Nobody in this frame is looking at me and that is exactly the point. Group photos get stiff the second everyone starts posing for the camera. So I got them lined up, then gave them something to react to instead of something to hold. Three seconds later this happened. Her sisters had been cracking jokes since the bridal suite that morning, so honestly the material was already there. Behind the lens: I put them in the shade under the tree line with open sky behind me doing the lifting. That dark green backdrop is why the purple satin and the yellow roses hit as hard as they do. Bright subject, deep background, no competition. Two years on and I still think that yellow dress in the middle of all that purple was the best styling decision of the whole day. 🌟 .
