JELLO!! Who is this?? Girl, it’s JAMS and @hot_summer_gays and we’re collabing on a nite of wiggly beats & dancefloor heat 🔥 JAMS x HSG is literally so pumped to welcome rising Twin Cities star @jam.la to headline with sensational selections for our minds and our souls but most importantly our BODIES 🧑‍🩰 We were lucky enough to catch her in her element at the Great Beyond this summer and knew we needed to share her colorful, tactical, energetic trax with y’all for a proper dancefloor workout 🧩 Jamila (jah-mee-la) stays busy as a member of the Body High Collective/monthly and word of her musical energy quickly spread around MPLS and beyond! Inspired first and foremost by rhythm and movement, she seeks as an artist to create spaces for dancers to feel alive and fully connect with their physical selves, each other, and the music - we cannot wait !! 🫟 On party starting duties we’ve arranged a meeting of magnificent minds: @sarah.akawa and @djdreamgirl.mp3 . Our beloved Sarah is back on the scene and we are overjoyed to have her behind the decks again to share her new musical chapters with us, now as our newest JAMS crew member (post to come!) For this extra special welcome celebration we knew we had to welcome her HSG baddies properly and sprinkle some of the #HouseSummerGays magic on our evening. We’ll start our extended B2B at 8pm to allow resident Dreamgirl to properly share her feral, acidic rave and house stompers after an insane summer of shaking up floors around the Midwest. The dance floor at Mortimer’s Bar in Minneapolis feels like a sauna on Pride weekend. Dani (aka Starthirl) is mixing hard-groove techno behind the decks on stage. The packed crowd of energetic dancers shuffles to the pounding kick drums. Bodies slick with sweat slide past one another toward the patio for fresh air and a smoke break. Metallic streamers dangle overhead. Joey (aka TECHNODOLL) jumps behind to decks next to turn the bass up even harder. Hosting the party is Body High, the DJ collective that plays a Mortimer’s residency every third Sunday of the month from 10 p.m–2 a.m. If you frequent DIY events around the Twin Cities, it’s hard to miss Body High members: On a cold night in March, Joey welcomes people to a dark, industrial show at Gateway; Dani, Jamila, and Emma (aka Girl Blunt) jam under a bridge in St. Paul as autumn leaves fall; Emma curates the Synastry dance party, formerly at VFW, now at the Terminal Bar. The four DJs played their first show together last August. Emma and another DJ at Synastry wanted to book a gig at Mort’s, and by the time the venue gave them a date, that DJ had left the country. Emma looked around her circle to find a line-up: Joey was her hair stylist, she met Jamila through friends, and Jamila recommended Dani, who had just released their first mix. “It didn’t start as a collective or a residency,” Emma says. “This was gonna be a one-off show, giving newer DJs—newer femme, queer, non-binary DJs—a chance to create a dance floor, and it was such a success and natural connection and synergy between. I’ve been racking my brain trying to find the proper words to describe celebrating one year of @geturbodyhigh and every ounce of what that means to me but I kept finding them falling short. There’s no way to describe how this party has changed my life and transformed dance floor and underground club culture in the span of a single year. What started as a one off party with 4 new DJs has turned into a monthly ritual, a space to find your people, to find new music, to find yourself. We are now a proud collective and have committed ourselves to maintaining and uplifting spaces for queer, trans, femme, and bipoc audience members and neighbors anywhere we play. We have committed ourselves to community care, learning about who we are as artists, learning about each other and how to work together and build, and just as importantly, our audience, really just DIYing this the whole way up. We have a team of beautiful friends that do so much behind the scenes work to help make it all possible. Body High is a collective and also a movement and also a family. To come to Body High is to experience revolution in real time and see what can happen when we come together with a shared vision, one we are all actively creating together. I felt the golden sun shining was the perfect way to convey my feelings on the beautiful metamorphosis we have been witnessing in dance spaces rise and transform in Minneapolis, it also reflects my set which will be closing the event 4-6 taking you out of the darkness and into a new day.
