One of the joys of my work is discovering creative counterparts who I can collaborate with over the long term. I love going deep with someone, building trust, and watching the magic that comes from years of shared experience. That is exactly what has happened with my friend Maria Giannini, @maria_giannini1856_firenze .⁣ ⁣ Maria is a sixth-generation paper marbler and bookbinder from Florence. Her family has been practicing this art for generations, and she is the first woman to lead the company.⁣ ⁣ Since 2018, she has been a part of La Dolce Vita, bringing her passion, skill, and joy each time she leads a workshop at the retreat. From marbled paper to silk scarves, leather journals, photo albums, Christmas ornaments, and so much more, our work together has been pure joy and endless inspiration.⁣ ⁣ Her work has also reached haute couture houses (shh - it’s top secret 🤫 ), Acqua di Parma, S’well, and more. She is an artist who is constantly pushing the envelope while also honouring the past.⁣ ⁣ I’m thrilled to share that Maria will be part of our fall 𝗟𝗮 𝗗𝗼𝗹𝗰𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝘁𝗮: 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁, 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟯-𝟭𝟬, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 as we join her and try our hand at this ancient art.⁣ ⁣ Meeting Maria is a rare opportunity to connect with someone who carries a family history of art and craft that is almost impossible to find in North America. Today was one of those days that simply glowed from start to finish.⁣ ⁣ We were joined by my dear friend, Maria Giannini @maria_giannini1856_firenze, who travelled from Florence to lead us in the continuation of a project we began earlier in the week with @missmustardseed (Marian Parsons).⁣ ⁣ Together with Marian, we began travel journals.⁣ Today, we learned to marble the paper that would become the covers of those journals.⁣ ⁣ Maria is a sixth-generation artisan, carrying on her family’s centuries-old bookbinding and paper-marbling tradition in Florence. This time, she brought along her daughter, Margherita, the seventh generation, which made the day feel even more special.⁣ ⁣ We set up in the Limonaria, the little greenhouse at our villa, where the soft, diffused light filtered through the glass and wrapped us in the most peaceful glow.⁣ ⁣ The air was full of concentration, laughter, and that unmistakable joy that comes when you’re learning something new.⁣ ⁣ Most of our guests had never done paper marbling before, and yet by the end of the session, every single person held a piece they were truly proud of. ⁣ ⁣ The color palettes were so varied and beautiful, from bold and bright to soft and organic, and Maria guided everyone with such patience and encouragement. She has this rare gift of coaxing out not just skill, but confidence.⁣ ⁣ It’s easy to see why she’s become such an integral part of our retreats since she first joined us in 2018. Her presence brings both calm and spark; the perfect combination for a creative day.⁣ ⁣ We ended the afternoon by using our marbled paper to create colourful unique covers for the journals we made earlier in the week. Sometimes the dreams we carry take years to unfold.⁣ ⁣ I first invited @missmustardseed to teach at my La Dolce Vita Creative Lifestyle Retreat back in 2017. I had read her blog, book - “Inspired You”, and admired her creative spirit. I knew she would be the perfect fit.⁣ ⁣ But the timing wasn’t right. Her boys were young, her family was in a busy season, and then later, when I reached out again, they were moving. Each time, the door quietly closed.⁣ ⁣ Fast forward to 2021, when our mutual friend @jeanneoliver invited both of us to be part of a business mastermind.⁣ ⁣ There were five of us total, and just one week before our first meeting, my mom was diagnosed with ALS and I became her primary caregiver. I told the group I completely understood if they wanted me to step away because my life had just shifted in a major way.⁣ ⁣ Instead, those women stayed beside me through the hardest chapter of my life. They gave me space to show up however I could and offered grace and friendship that helped carry me through.⁣ ⁣ So when the chance came to invite Marian to be my special guest again, it felt like something tender and full-circle.⁣ ⁣ The timing was finally right. And what we shared today was even richer because of the friendship that had formed in the years between.⁣ ⁣ Today Marian led our retreat group through the beginnings of a travel journal, talking about color theory, blind contour drawing, and how to capture the details of this experience on paper.⁣ ⁣ It was inspiring and stimulating to feel the creative sparks fly as each guest let her creativity take wing!⁣ ⁣ Later this week, we’ll turn these pages created with Marian into handmade books with my Florentine friend, bookbinder and and paper marbler @maria_giannini1856_firenze.⁣ ⁣ Today was a reminder that sometimes the detours are part of the gift.
