50 Shenanigans to Commemorate Turning 50…#26 Celebrate my birthday at Flint Hills Foster Teen Camps
First of all, thank you everyone who took a moment of their day to wish me a happy birthday. Where I was at, I did not have very good cell service and we really were not supposed to be using our phones anyways, so I did not see your kind words until today. My day began with my bestie knocking on my door at 6:30 am with a cup of coffee in hand and wished me a happy birthday. Next we went up to an observation area where it was absolutely beautiful and I did my Woo-Hoo I’m 50 today video. Confession…it took a couple of takes before we got that one. At the morning support staff I got a happy birthday serenade. And I spent the rest of the day, like the previous two days, hanging out with 12 boys who were just the kindest and sweetest kids. I taught several of them how to fly my drone which I think really enjoyed. I have been told I am really brave to let these kids use my expensive equipment. But I figured if it sparks an interest, or gives someone joy, then it’s a good thing. At the end of the day I was serenaded again by all the coaches and staff, this time along with Jason who also was celebrating his birthday. When I got home, both John and Bella greeted me at the door. I must say Bella’s enthusiasm seeing me was much bigger than John’s (he needs to work on that a little more for next time). I’m sure some of you are wondering why I spent my birthday at camp. I have 12 reasons why. On Wednesday I saw 12 smiles on faces that weren’t there on Monday. I saw 12 kids hold their heads a little higher, laugh a little louder, and look more confident as they boarded a bus to take them back home. 12 kids have started a path of healing from the hurt that has been bestowed upon them. It will probably be a long journey and at times it won’t be easy. But the path of healing began on June 5th, and knowing I had a small roll in that, is the best gift I could ever receive.
Plus I got to spend my birthday with all these beautiful people!
