Hemisphere — Abdulnasser Gharem

A duality at the heart of every Saudi:
Devotion to faith and defence of the homeland.
Two halves of one consciousness.

Above us rise the domes of mosques and the helmets of warriors.
Within us, faith that never wavers, and a homeland we will never compromise. 🇸🇦

Marcel Duchamp’s revolutionary ‘readymades’ challenged what art could be. A generation later, his ideas found new life across the Gulf, inspiring artists such as Hassan Sharif and a group of pioneers who turned found objects, repetition, and everyday materials into powerful artistic statements.

From ‘The Five’ in the UAE to ‘The Circle’ in Oman and ‘Shatta’ in Saudi Arabia, artists embraced conceptual art to question identity, modernization, consumerism, and the rapidly changing realities around them. Their installations, performances, videos, and assemblages expanded the boundaries of artistic expression across the region.

Swipe through to discover how one of the most influential ideas in modern art history traveled from Marcel Duchamp to the avant-garde movements that transformed contemporary art in the Gulf.

Collect a limited edition, 24-layer silkscreen print of the seminal 2013 work ‘Hemisphere,’ by Abdulnasser Gharem.

Gharem uses a stamp-based technique inspired by Islamic interior design to present a central dome split into two halves, representing both the different sides of the brain and the conflict between religious tradition and contemporary cultural identity.

Limited to an edition of 40, each print is signed by the artist and individually numbered.

Link in bio to enter the draw.
Closes on 25 August at 14:00 UK time.

“Your skin tingles when you are being watched, I was afraid to open my eyes, I could sense that someone-or something - inside my room was staring at me. And it wasn’t the cat.”

After 17 years of self-doubt, with the support of a tribe of experts, Qismah & Naseeb is finally here. Deeply grateful to those who believed me in me when i didn’t.
