20 MM AP: Matthew / Matthew Apollo

Today, I met Matthew aka @alchemical_bum — a musician and songwriter performing under the name Matthew Apollo, with his first album on the way with possible record release at @ghosttown_ap

Matthew’s music is rooted in Americana, folk, and acoustic storytelling. But before songwriting, there was poetry.

More than 400 poems, essays on everything from politics to art, and a fascination with telling stories eventually led him to music. In just about a year, he’s written more than 100 songs.

For Matthew, it’s not about writing hits. It’s about writing something real.

Influenced by Woody Guthrie, Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, and Todd Snider, Matthew believes music should tell stories that make people feel something — whether it’s love, heartbreak, loss, or the strange experiences that make us human.

He shared the story behind Thomas West, a song about a man devastated by losing someone he loves. When Matthew performed it at an open mic, both he and members of the audience were moved to tears.

That’s the power of storytelling.

Matthew also draws inspiration from Jungian psychology, using songwriting to explore the unconscious and give shape to emotions we don’t always understand.

When I asked how he hopes his music impacts people, he brought it back to authenticity.

“Being what you are, you know, and not trying to mask it.”

With plans for an album release celebration at Ghost Town and ambitions to bring his music to Nashville, Matthew is just getting started.

That’s what 20 MM AP is about — the musicians, poets, outsiders, and storytellers who turn their experiences into art and remind us that Asbury’s creative soul lives in people willing to tell the truth.

Introducing dealers Scott and Jess Miller of @GhostTown_ap. They’ll be dealing their vintage clothing, accessories, and lighting in Booth D264.

Hailing from the fabled Asbury Park, NJ, these two vintage ruffians aren’t just some kick around kids popping up in a perfectly crafted Springsteen song, they’ve been at it for over a decade. Originally dealing in #antiquelamp parts to make custom lighting, Scott and Jess found an appreciation for #Antiques as their business began to grow.

One thing that they love about coming to #Brimfield is, “That you never know what you’re gonna find.” Scott says he also enjoys, “The anticipation of knowing you’ll find something unexpected.” As many people know, the community around the #brimfieldantiquemarket is a huge source of joy for all who attend. Scott adds, “It’s nice to connect and cross paths with familiar faces. It makes it feel so communal.” We couldn’t agree more. There’s always great stories to swap about stumbling across that perfect item or getting a helluva deal on the quick.

It might not be Fourth of July Asbury Park, but September 8th @Dealers_Choice_Brimfield still has that aura rising behind us.
