What happens when you bring a room full of founders together and give them the space to be honest about what it really takes to build?

Last week, our Cohort 6 founders came together for the AIC Founders Retreat, a space designed for founders to step away from the day-to-day operations of their ventures and have the candid conversations that can be difficult to have while building.

They put their businesses in the hot seat, receiving feedback from fellow founders on specific aspects of their businesses and challenging each other to think differently.

In our Builder-to-Builder session, led by Folake Owodunni, Co-Founder and CEO of Emergency Response Africa (ERA), founders learned from her experience with Hiring Your First Real Leadership Hire and how she got it wrong once before getting it right. Folake shared candid lessons from building ERA, a health-tech company using technology to connect people experiencing medical emergencies with trained first responders, ambulances and hospitals across Africa.

In our Builder-to-Backer session, led by Mosorire Aiyeyemi, Investment Analyst at British International Investment, founders explored "The Patterns He Now Screens For". Drawing from his experience across energy access, business intelligence and project development in Nigeria, Mosorire shared insights into what investors look for and the patterns founders should be mindful of as they build and grow.

These are the kinds of conversations that move ventures forward. They help founders identify gaps in their businesses and, more importantly, remind them that they are not alone. Sometimes, one of the most valuable things a founder can have is the opportunity to sit in a room with people who understand the journey firsthand.

We are glad to create that space for our founders, and we know they will carry these lessons with them as they continue to build, grow and navigate what comes next.

📽️ Listen to what our founders had to say and experience the retreat with us.

Day 2 of #CAIF2026 was everything we hoped it would be and more!

The energy in the room was undeniable. Through panels, innovation spotlights, and fireside conversations, we explored how to build cross-border technology solutions, strengthen economic ties, and scale innovation globally.

Founders, investors, policymakers, ecosystem builders, students, and community leaders joined us from Canada and around the world. This was always the vision of the Canada-Africa Innovation Festival: bringing diverse communities together to explore opportunities that abound for economic growth through the policy frameworks that the Canada-Africa Strategy presents, strengthen connections between both regions, and be inspired by the innovation emerging across Africa and its diaspora.

So, how did the Strategy come to life?

→ Investment Zone: Nine founders pitched high-growth ventures, with $100,000 awarded through our investment partners to support the next generation of innovators.

→ Trade Marketplace: African organizations building commercial bridges between Canada and Africa connected, showcased their work, and sparked new opportunities for collaboration.

→ Innovation Spotlights: Founders demonstrated how solutions are already scaling across borders through ventures like @cellectlaboratories, @yekola.app, and @giddaa_housing.

→ CAIF Solution Sessions: Conversations on innovation, market access, capital formation, and the future of Canada’s Africa Strategy explored practical pathways for deeper Canada-Africa economic cooperation.

The Canada-Africa relationship is no longer a future opportunity. It is a present reality being built by people committed to creating shared prosperity across both regions.

🏆 We are excited to share that Giddaa emerged as Runner-Up at the Africa Impact Momentum Stream, receiving a $10,000 award to support our mission.

The event brought together visionary founders, investors, ecosystem leaders, and innovators working to solve some of Africa's biggest challenges.

During the program, our CEO spoke about the impending housing crisis in Nigeria, highlighting the affordability gap, rapid urbanisation, and the need for innovative solutions that make homeownership more accessible for everyday Africans.

Competing alongside incredible impact-driven startups made this recognition even more meaningful.

A huge thank you to the organisers, sponsors, judges, and everyone who supported us throughout this journey.

🏡 Our mission remains unchanged: ensuring that any African earning a sustainable income can own a home before the age of 40.

The journey continues. 🚀

Not a throwback Thursday, but let’s rewind a little…
Back to the Tiny Home Seminar 2025, where I rocked the mic as MC and Panel Moderator—guiding conversations that matter.

Sustainable housing is more than a trend—it’s a movement. For our people. For our planet. For our future.

Let’s build the kind of homes (and country) we’ll be proud to hand over to the next generation.
