A heartfelt thank you to Annie Parr @annierparr for bringing her generous spirit and profound approach to movement to KINA. It was a gift to feel, explore, move alongside you in Austin. Her work is a beautiful reminder of the universality of movement and its ability to create deep connection across varied histories.

And to everyone who joined us - thank you for showing up with such openness and curiosity. You made this truly special.

Check out @elcampobaja Annie’s stunning movement retreat home in Baja and hope to see you there!

Special thank you to our girl Lisa Parrish @lmparrish for helping make this possible.

发, a contact improve piece conceived by me and @anyasmolnikovastudio at @cipracticeandperformance

I’m interested in hair as a shared site of intimacy, ancestral memory, care, and control; something we tend, braid, pull, and surrender to one another. The piece explores the unstable space between tenderness and violence, dependence and resistance, and the strange negotiations that emerge when one body’s movement is tethered to another’s.

work in progress performance featuring @gigi__k @anyasmolnikovastudio @intenselistening @liliannakane @anna.vomacka and me

CDP Practice tonight by Angela @gigi__k 7-8, then jam from 8:15 -10. Come join! Dm with questions ♥️

Contemplative Dance Practice invites participants into a state of deep listening and embodied presence. This space helps us to slow down and cultivate an intimate relationship with our authentic expression as it unfolds moment to moment. CDP is rooted in compassion, curiosity and embracing the unknown, and can expand the landscape of our experience into realms of infinite possibility, kinesthetic delight and spontaneous emergence.

This movement container was created by dance educator and performance artist Barbara Dilly at Naropa University in the 1970s. CDP combines meditation and dance improvisation through a sequential progression of seated meditation, personal awareness practice and group movement. The container for this practice is woven collectively and actively held through compassionate witnessing of the group, by the group. CDP is a dynamic exploration of self awareness, fostering a deeper relationship with our internal and external world.

Angela has been dancing and performing in Austin for over 15 years, with a focus on contemporary aerial, post modern and site specific work. She’s performed with site specific aerial dance company Blue Lapis Light and has been featured in various performance projects with several local choreographers. In recent years her movement research has been primarily focused on experimental dance forms of improvisation, CI and ensemble work. She’s been especially influenced by working with Deborah Hay and Nina Martin/Lower Left Collective. In 2023, she completed a 550 hour ISMETA Somatic Movement Education certification from ACC, and has been a practicing LMT for 10 years.

#TDIF2025 Teaching Artist Feature!

Veronica DeWitt presents “All Bodies Speak” in TDIF’s lineup of classes.

“DanceAbility is an improvisational dance class for all people, in any combination of people. We use the language of dance to explore how all bodies speak in a space focused on eliminating isolation.

Co-taught with somatic movement practitioners trained in the DanceAbility method, class will begin in an opening circle to create a safe container, warm up to attend to sensation, relationship, time and design, and several improvisational exercises to lead us ultimately toward open dancing. Class concludes back in a closing circle for a short dialogue amongst participants. This class is for all levels, all bodies, all people!”

Veronica DeWitt holds a BA in Dance from the University of Oregon in 2003. She is a professional dancer, choreographer, aerialist, and Master Teacher of DanceAbility, and has had the privilege to work in the companies of Robin Stiehm (OR), Alito Alessi (OR). Kathy Dunn Hamrick (TX), and Art Spark Texas (TX), and has also been a presenter at national conferences and festivals such as SXSW EDU, NDEO, Austin Dance Festival, and TDIF. Currently, she teaches inclusive movement classes at Rosedale School in Austin, TX, and teaches DanceAbility classes at Austin Community College in the Somatic Movement Education Program.

Join us Oct 9-11 for dance classes, guest artist workshops, a live concert, and jams. Register through the link in our bio or on our website and choose from our 3-tiered ($25-$45) payment structure.

Tomorrow 8/21 Class + Jam @ ESPA !

doors 6:30
class 7pm
jam 8:15-9:45

class instruction by Angela Kaylor @gigi__k and Sam Mandlebaum

Instead of the hyper-focus hypnotism of the duet form of CI, this week we will bring our attention to the creativity of the collective body in the jam space. This still allows for “grazing”, where many brief duet moments come and go while attention remains open to the whole ensemble. With this added influence of so many more Bodyminds in your awareness, improvisation tends towards the symphonic, supportive, and altogether unpredictable sum of the parts. Bringing methods from Lower Left and Angie Hauser, Sam and Angela will co-facilitate this one-hour beginner-friendly intro to ensemble improvisation.

Angela has been dancing and performing in Austin for 15 years, with a focus on contemporary aerial, post modern and site specific work. She’s performed with site specific aerial dance company Blue Lapis Light and has been featured in various performance projects with several local choreographers. Over the past 4 years her movement research has been primarily focused on experimental dance forms of improvisation, CI and ensemble work. She’s been deeply influenced by working with Deborah Hay and Nina Martin/Lower Left Collective, as well as her training in Alito Alessi’s DanceAbility material. In 2023, she completed a 550 hour ISMETA Somatic Movement Education certification from ACC, and has been a practicing LMT for 10 years.

changed by this weekend’s spiral time ensemble, and once again leaving half of my heart in the south in flowing waters. when i move, my body feels like a body. when i move with you it feels like building a world together. thank you for holding me, for witnessing me, and for allowing me to do the same for you.

“i used to stretch both hands to the future. now i’ve been stretching one hand to the future and one to the past, and my house seems to be building up a lot stronger.” —simone forti in a letter to trisha brown, 1972.
