Today would have been Richard Gilder’s 88th birthday. He passed earlier this month but his legacy lives on in the hundreds of @gilderlehrman Institute of American History teacher seminars including the one we hosted in #Hingham last June for area teachers. Gilder also helped underwrite the Yale Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance and Abolition.

On May 12 New York and the study of History lost one of our greatest benefactors, Richard Gilder. He used his money to benefit all New Yorkers in numerous ways including the Central Park Conservancy. For me, Mr. Gilder allowed educators to immerse themselves in the complexity of American history and enrich our classrooms. I was privileged to teach at one of the first Gilder Saturday Academies and Mr. Gilder visited regularly. The Gilder Lehman Institute has provided not only New York students but students across the country access to our most important documents. As a New York historian, his revitalization of the New York Historical Society has brought thousands of New Yorkers closer to the vital role of our city in American history. When you go to Central Park this summer, say a pray for Richard Gilder, who helped save the park and so much of our city. #richardgilder #gilderlehrmaninstitute #gilderlehrman #newyorkhistoricalsociety #centralparkconservancy #yaleuniversity #gildersaturdayacademies #newyorkhistory #greatnewyorkers

We echo the loss of Richard Gilder '50. Decades of NMH students have benefited from Mr. Gilder's outstanding generosity, and his legacy will live on for generations to come, with the Gilder Center, which broke ground just this week! It is with great sadness that we report that Richard “Dick” Gilder ’50, a member of the NMH Board of Trustees from 1968 to 1976 and a lifelong supporter of the school, died on May 12, at age 87, in Charlottesville, Virginia. His transformational gift for a new science and math center at NMH remains the largest cash gift in the school’s history. Currently under construction, the Gilder Center will help NMH bring math, science, and technology education to an even higher level.

Packed up all my stuff to move into a different building and I never want to see another banker’s box again - filled 52 of them with books, documents, and academic detritus. If school is ever in session I’ll be on the first floor of Academic 2.

It might not be glamorous, but this is how we’re staying in touch these days. Meg Johnson ’20, Letty Perez ’21, and Conor O’Boyle ’21 touched base with Gwen Shufro ’06 about their Nonprofit Board Leadership Program (NBLP) project with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History yesterday. The students are working with the institute on best uses of their online learning resources. We can do this!

So extremely proud of this student for her project for our study of the battles of the Revolutionary War. Other things included “text messages” , songs, news stories and slide presentations from other students. #history #5thgrade #americanrevolution #cwti2017

In the 1870s the women’s rights movement hit adolescence: cranky, difficult, awkwardly independent. Before the Civil War it was sister to the movement for Black emancipation, and close. After the war the siblings grew estranged. They were now separate movements, and weaker apart.⠀
But the decade began with such hope. A cataclysmic war had ended slavery! Momentous change was clearly possible. In 1870 & ‘72, southern Black male voter turnout topped 90%. 20 African-American men were elected to the House; 2 to the Senate; 300 more to state legislatures. Black women organized to aid freedpeople; northerners came south to teach in new schools. ⠀
Despite a bitter split that led to the creation of two Suffrage Associations - the National & the American - women white and Black believed that their own enfranchisement was not far off.⠀
*They were so wrong.*⠀
It hurts to realize that in 1870, women really thought they had a chance. The 14th & 15th Amendments weren’t perfect, but they thought they’d pass a 16th Amendment soon. Wyoming enfranchised women in 1869, Utah in 1870. It seemed within reach.⠀
So what if? What if northern abolitionists had insisted on universal suffrage during the Reconstruction amendments? Could they have convinced the white male Senators & governors who held all the cards? Or would no one have gotten the vote?⠀
What if Victoria Woodhull’s presidential run had been less scandal-ridden? What if Stanton & Anthony had been more willing to compromise? 🤷‍♀️⠀
But what if . . . What if Reconstruction had lasted? What if Lincoln hadn’t been assassinated? ⠀
_That_ could have mattered. It could have changed things.⠀
@DrIbram points out that most of the Black men in Congress supported women’s suffrage. If they had expanded power by the end of the 1870s instead of having it ripped away, women would almost certainly have voted sooner. ⠀
