In this sculpture, Gil Gelpi transforms the human body into an archive of collective labour. The standing figure is covered by impressions of hands and fingertips, each retaining the marks, textures, and irregularities of an individual presence.

Created as a tribute to the generations of men and women who worked at the former Asland cement factory, the sculpture grew from a collaborative process involving several of its past workers. Their hands become part of the work itself, carrying personal histories into a shared form.

Across the surface, palms, fingers, and smaller imprints gather like layers of memory. They speak of physical effort, repetition, skill, and the relationships built through years of working alongside others. The solitary figure therefore holds many lives within it, turning an individual body into a monument shaped by a community.

The work will be inaugurated on 24 July at the Museu del Ciment de Castellar de n’Hug, commemorating fifty years since the closure of the factory and preserving the human presence behind its industrial history.

What keeps an artist moving forward?

In this conversation with Mangroves Art Foundation, Gil Gelpi reflects on the ideas that shape his sculptural practice. Speaking about his creative process, he describes each work as the beginning of the next, where experimentation, new materials, and unexpected discoveries continuously open new paths.

Rather than seeking repetition, Gelpi embraces transformation. Every sculpture becomes a space for learning, where technical exploration and intuition evolve together. As he explains, the creative process is never linear—it is a continuous flow in which each finished work already contains the seed of the next.

We are delighted to share this conversation with one of the artists from Arttyco’s Curated Artists Selection.

SIREN’S DREAM
Acrylic resin, natural fibers, wood and pigments
22 × 36 × 35 cm, 2026

In Siren’s Dream, Gil Gelpi returns to one of the oldest myths of the Mediterranean. The sculpture draws inspiration from the sirens once believed to inhabit the Gulf of Naples, figures suspended between the human, the animal, and the symbolic.

Here, a sleeping face emerges from a body formed by intertwined hands. Rather than feathers or wings, Gil uses human gestures to construct the figure, transforming the mythological creature into a reflection on collective experience. The hands protect, support, and shape the body, becoming both structure and language.

The intense blue surface reinforces the dreamlike quality of the work. The figure appears suspended between sleep and transformation, between memory and imagination. It is a being that seems to belong to another time, while remaining deeply connected to the human condition.

Through this fusion of body and myth, Gil explores how ancient stories continue to inhabit us. Not as distant narratives, but as images that survive within our collective unconscious, resurfacing through form, gesture, and material.

Pluribus
Acrylic resin, natural fibers, wood and pigments
78 × 40 × 43 cm, 2026

In Pluribus, Gil Gelpi reflects on the body as something never entirely singular. Faces emerge from the figure, growing outward as quiet presences—different expressions, different states, all inhabiting the same form.

Rather than presenting identity as fixed or complete, the sculpture suggests something layered and constantly shifting. The figure expands through repetition, carrying traces of intimacy, memory, and relation. What appears is a shared presence, where identity unfolds instead of splitting.

Natural fibers, wood, and resin merge into a tactile surface that feels both organic and constructed, reinforcing Gelpi’s ongoing interest in transformation and interconnectedness. The body here becomes a space of accumulation—shaped not only by the self, but by encounter, proximity, and community.

Pluribus invites us to reflect on multiplicity: on how many versions of ourselves coexist, and how deeply we are formed through others.
