Rather than our usual food tour that we normally find, today we took a cooking lesson instead, learning to cook 6 traditional Indonesian dishes and trying some new ingredients we’d not seen before 👍 Great fun and we then ate some great food ( well cooked of course 😁) Thanks to all the team @gilicookingclasses - highly recommended 🤩 #visitgiliair #gilicookingclasses #seetheworld🌍✈️❤️️ #suitcasing

Came for the beaches, stayed for the food 🍢🌊 Satay, rendang, nasi goreng, pepes ikan, grilled prawns, mie goreng AND gelato on a car-free island street… Bali & Gili Air, you really said “no bad meals allowed” and we respect that deeply 🙏🍽️✨

🎓 EDU-BITE 🇮🇩 | @gilicookingclasses — Gili Trawangan

Some of the best meals are the ones you make yourself.

Our 3rd island — Gili T — and we joined a cooking class. Two couples, two brilliant instructors, four dishes.

We started with dessert. Klepon — glutinous rice balls, molten palm sugar inside, rolled in fresh coconut. Bite in and it explodes. Like a mochi, but lighter. Not overly sweet — as all great Asian desserts aren't.

Then the tempeh starter we almost skipped. We'd had tempeh before on this trip. Cold. Bland. Fresh tempeh pan-fried until crisp, with a from-scratch peanut sauce — garlic, chilli, roasted peanuts, kecap manis — was a revelation. We were conservative with the chilli. The other couple wasn't. The coughing confirmed it.

Leon kept the leftover peanut sauce for the Mie Goreng. Stirred through the noodles — genius.

The highlight: yellow chicken curry paste from scratch. Galangal, ginger, lemongrass, candlenut — Indonesia's natural thickener. Runnier than we're used to. With rice, perfect.

We learned. We laughed. We ate everything.

A proper Edu-Bite. 🧑‍🍳
