Triangulum Galaxy | M33 (24.08.2026) The second target for the night was the Triangulum Galaxy, one of the bigger galaxies in the sky. We actually were slightly close to the moon for normal color imaging, but we did it anyway. In addition we did a mosaic, where you shoot two regions that overlap to cover more area of the sky. Now we made multiple mistakes during the setup in NINA. First of all we took the same amount of Luminance filter images as for each color channel, while normally we take about 3 times as many. This is because we generate all the details with this channel and only use the other channels to add color to the details. On top of that we had an error in the logic of our sequence resulting in that we did not have color information for all areas.  So in the end we only had good luminance data. Now we got a really nice black and white image out of this data, even though I could have been so much better… Photos/Time: 0:38h (LRGB: 10+9 imgs @ 2 min.) Pickering’s Triangle | NGC 6979 (24.08.2026) So this day we had a nice weather prediction, with the curiosity that the seeing was predicted to be not so great at around 2,5 arcseconds, but with barely any other disturbances from the jet stream and other layers in the atmosphere.  So we decided to set up the big scope and hope we would capture enough details to make it worthwhile. The first target was a part of the Veil Nebula called the Pickerings Triangle. It actually was discovered by Williamina Fleming, but instead of being named after her, it was named after the director of the observatory where it was discovered: Edward Charles Pickering. The image is pretty good considering we had a full moon and we can only shoot toward it. Photos/Time: 3:20h (SHO: 14/13/13 imgs/5 min.) Andromeda Galaxy | M31 (13.08.2026) After the Pelican nebula we did not have a nice target in our lists that was visible from our Balcony. So we went to the old faithfull: the Andromeda Galaxy. We went for a combination of LRGB and H-alpha. A nice image worth posting, even if it is not that special. Photos/Time: 2:26h (L:18 imgs@ 30s, RGB: 18/17/17 imgs @ 60s, H: 17 imgs@5 min.) Crescent Nebula | C27 (25.06.2026) Almost a full month went by without good weather, but finally we got some good nights. Unfortunately we also had an almost full moon, and there were not many good targets available that were far enough away from it for normal light, so we needed targets for the narrowband filters. The first night we tried to capture a target that was a little too faint to capture for the conditions here in Hamburg, plus we had some technical issues with the lens and camera. So the second night of good weather we decided to capture a slightly brighter target with a telescope, even though it appeared a bit later in the already short night: The Crescent Nebula. This is a nebula that was generated by the emissions of the bright star at the center of it. Due to faster solar wind catching up to materials ejected earlier it emits a lot in the H-alpha and OIII frequencies of the spectrum. The data we captured was great! During the processing of the image we also tried a lot with different palettes (how you combine the three filters with the RGB channels), with great results as you can see! The first set of images uses only the H-alpha filter for the red channel, and the OIII filter for the green and blue channels (RGB - HOO), the second set uses the SII filter for the blue channel (HOS), resulting in a lot of nice yellows, and in the 3rd set we switched the R and B channels from the second set (HSO), resulting in a lot of pinks and purples. Beehive cluster (full) | M44 (22.03.2026) This time of year there are not many targets available that are easy to capture when the seeing is not great, so for the second setup we actually took the same one as for the big one. We could use the 350mm telescope, because I bought a second Gemini focuser, so we could use this combination. This was of course taken using a refractor telescope, so there is no spider to create diffraction spikes. It makes the image slightly less dynamic. Now the field of view is also slightly bigger so the bright stars are all concentrated in the middle, which also does not help.    Photos/Time: 1:50h (L: 19@2 min., RGB:6/6/6@4min.) Beehive cluster | M44 (22.03.2026) Finally we had another good night in the weather forecast, so we set up a double setup again. Now the weather was predicted to be a bit turbulent, but actually that was not the big issue and we got pretty good guiding. Instead the big mount stopped working after the meridian flip 😧. So a big panic, and quick disassembly of the telescope to see if we could fix it, but to no avail. I asked the manufacturer if he had an idea with a description, and I had an answer waiting for me the next morning! All it took was loosening the tension on the belt drive and all was good again, but too late to save the imaging session :(.  I was really surprised how good the colors of the stars came out, and the diffraction spikes look awesome! I really have to thank the guys and girls at Proxisky, especially Nokk! They are awesome with quick and professional support, and their mounts are awesome! Messier 3 | M3 (09.03.2026) The second target of this evening was something new to us: A globular cluster. From afar this initially looks similar to a galaxy, but it really is a dense group of stars in the milky way, our own galaxy. It really helped that we had such good seeing and guiding to make out even the smallest of stars. In the end we could have exposed slightly longer to make the details a bit better, but the result is really nice! Whirlpool Galaxy | M51 (18/19.01.26) The last target for the larger setup was one that we wanted to try for a while, but did not have a good opportunity until now: M51. This is a very interesting set of two galaxies that have started to contact each other. The larger M51a is a very nice spiral galaxy, while the smaller M51b is a dwarf galaxy. This pair had been studied a lot because it is the brightest set of interacting galaxies in the sky. We really like the image simply because it really shows nice colors and structure. By the way: If you are wondering why we typically post two different looking images: We both post process the images individually, so we get two different results :) Photos/Time: 4:59h (L:12@3 / 43@1.5min., RGB:4/4/4@6 + 14/14/14@3min.) Hickson Compact Group 44 | HCG 44 (18./19.01.26) So before the last target for the night became visible, we pointed the telescope at a group of galaxies that looked interesting, so we pointed the telescope at them just to see what we would be able to capture. It shows how different galaxies can look, from the simple cloud of stars in the lower right to the spirals and two-pronged galaxies in the middle. Horsehead Nebula | B33 (18/19.01.26) The first target for the larger setup was the horsehead nebula. In the past we took wider field images using 350mm or smaller focal length, but for this night we wanted to try and capture more detail using the longer focal length of the 150P at 675mm.  Again this was a multistage session, imaging until the nebula disappeared behind buildings and restarting after it had appeared again. In the end we did capture a good amount of data, and the images we generated are really nice! Flaming Star and Tadpole nebula | IC405/IC410 (18/19.01.26) The first target for the small setup was the area around the Flaming star and Tadpole Nebula. This region has a lot of red nebulae, but also a lot of stars.  After the first night we discovered that we saturated the sensor very quickly with this lens, and that we needed shorter exposures for the second day. In the end it took a lot of work to make a nice picture from this data set, and we only used the data from the second night because the stars were a lot better in that set… Photos/Time: 4:30h (270 imgs/60 sec) Cam: ToupTek 585C Lens: Samyang 135mm f2 + Onstep focuser Filter: K&F Concept Nano-X light pollution cut Mount: EQ3 with Onstep  Guide Cam: DIY camera with IMX290 on a 50mm guide scope Location: Hamburg Conditions: Good seeing, no clouds, no moon Tools: N.I.N.A. | PHD2 Editing: SIRIL | GIMP  #flamenebula #tadpolenebula #astrophotography #deepskyphotography #spacenerds
