Opening this weekend: Bagurrk Murrup-Kotahitanga as part of Radiant Pavilion Contemporary Jewellery and Object Biennial 2026 (@radiantpavilion) Bagurrk Murrup–Kotahitanga brings together words and concepts from Aboriginal and Māori languages, an exchange between women from diverse Aboriginal language groups across Australia and Māori iwi of Aotearoa. ‘bagurrk’ refers to women in Woi-wurrung, while ‘murrup’ evokes spirit or lifeforce. ‘kotahitanga’ speaks to unity, togetherness and collective strength in te reo Māori. This landmark exhibition brings together contemporary Māori and Aboriginal wāhine jewellers for the first time. Co-curated by Keri-Mei Zagrobelna and Blak Dot Gallery, this exhibition marks a significant moment of Indigenous exchange — one that not only acknowledges shared histories of colonisation and survival, but also celebrates the strength, innovation, and leadership of wāhine artists working today. 🔗 in bio to learn more about the exhibition and participating artists. ///\\\///\\\ OPENING EVENT Saturday 24 October, 1PM Special performance by Te Whare Haka o Nārama (@tewharehakaonaarama) EXHIBITION DATES 24 October — 15 November Exhibiting Artists: Tiahuia Arapeta (@tiahuia_arapeta), Maree Clarke (@ree_clarke), Carly Tarkari Dodd (@tarkari.art), Turumeke Harrington (@turumeke), Molly Mahoney (@_mollymahoney_), Gina Matchitt (@ginamatchitt), Juanita McLauchlan (@juanitamc4217), Neke Moa (@nekemoa), Lisa Waup (@lisa.waup) Areta Wilkinson (@aretawilkinson) and Keri-Mei Zagrobelna (also co-curator @keri_mei_z). ///\\\///\\\ ‘Bagurrk Murrup-Kotahitanga’ exhibition has been generously supported by Blak Dot Gallery, Toi Maori Aotearoa and Blumhardt Foundation. — 2/2 Photo: Simon Fazio (@faz.io)

Opening on October 11, "Uhengaparaoa, Taonga Tuku Iho: Ancestral Gifts and Contemporary Māori Art," celebrates Whakatōhea identity, connection to whenua (land) and whakapapa (genealogy), and the resilience of cultural traditions in the face of colonial suppression. At the heart of the exhibition is a treasured kaitaka (cloak) from the Fowler Museum collection, regarded as an ancestor by the Whakatōhea community. In response, contemporary Whakatōhea artists create works that honor, reinterpret, and extend the knowledge carried through generations. From finely woven kete and kākahu to contemporary works incorporating recycled materials, feathers, and new forms, these artists demonstrate how mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) remains vital and evolving. FUNDING SUPPORT REQUEST : Bagurrk Murrup – Kotahitanga is a groundbreaking Indigenous contemporary jewelry exhibition bringing together Māori and First Nations Australian wāhine (women) jewelers for the first time at Radiant Pavilion 2026, hosted at Blak Dot Gallery in Naarm (Melbourne). Link to support in bio: https://www.thearts.co.nz/boosted/projects/bagurrk-murrup—kotahitanga The exhibition will take place 24 October – 15 November 2026. Grounded in connection across Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa, this kaupapa centres whakapapa, whenua, and Indigenous adornment as powerful forms of storytelling. While this kaupapa holds deep cultural and artistic significance, dedicated funding has not yet been secured. We now turn to our community to ensure our artists are fully supported to present their work on an international stage. Funds raised will directly support artists to show up with mana—covering freight, travel, and exhibition delivery—ensuring this kaupapa can be realized with care, integrity, and respect for the work and those who carry it. The Team This project is curated by Keri-Mei Zagrobelna (Te Āti Awa, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui), with support from Kimba Thompson, Director of Blak Dot Gallery, as co-curator. Keri-Mei is a contemporary Māori jeweler and emerging curator based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Aotearoa. She brings together a collective of leading and emerging Māori and First Nations Australian wāhine artists, each grounded in their own cultural practices, materials, and narratives. The exhibition is supported through strong relationships with Blak Dot Gallery in Naarm, alongside a wider network of Indigenous artists, mentors, jewelry makers and communities across Aotearoa and Australia. This is a deeply collaborative and Indigenous-led kaupapa, built on trust, whanaungatanga, and shared intention, centered on uplifting and resourcing artists to stand strongly in an international context. Ahakoa he iti. Hastings Art Gallery, Te Whare Toi o Heretaunga. 12 June-12 September 2026. A conversation between a group of contenporary adornment makers, curated by Tryphena Cracknell and featuring work by Pepi-Joy Gilgen, Gina Matchitt, Matthew McIntyre-Wilson, Aroha Miller, Neke Moa, Rowan Panther, Keri-Mei Zagrobelna and Frances Stachl. I sort of forgot to take a lot of photos, but here is a quick run around the room. It was a real joy to be included in this line up, followed by a 2 day wananga with all the exhibitors and the curator. Ngā mihi nui to @orongomai for pulling us together and giving us such a beautiful brief, for your organisation and for keeping us all so well fed. Mihi atu also to the staff at Te Whare Toi o Heretaunga. To my co exhibitors, @hardkoa_harikoa @ginamatchitt @matthewmcintyrewilson @aroha_millar @nekemoa @rowanpantherlace @keri_mei_z it was such an honour to be showing work along side all of you. Whar out, it has been a massive week of next level everything. O-Tawahao Marae hosted a talented bunch of Māori Curators to hui about toi, the future and te ao Maori. It was a time to reaffirm the things we intrinsically know, such as 1: Learning is best done with a full puku, from the comfort of your bed, surrounded by whānau in a place of inspiration. 2: Learning is better done together; tuakana and teina are a duality we all hold at every stage of our life. 3: Success is the collective. The collective is mātauranga. 4: Raranga is a practice woven together with gossip and laughter since ages ago. 5: Be empowered by tupuna wisdom. 6: Everyone's career journey is different. Traditional pathways into roles such as these are institutional and outdated. Kia ora whanau. Can't wait for the next one. Beautiful pics by @thepriceofchange
