Last week, Kranz took our members to Photo London, not to browse, but to look properly. With our guide Gina leading the way, we moved through works that demanded time, conversation, and a willingness to be unsettled.

A few notes on what we saw:

Where does a photograph end and a painting begin?
Elger Esser’s landscapes carry the weight of centuries: Dutch Golden Age stillness, Romantic reverie, the slow ache of something half-remembered. Plouescat is printed on silver-coated copper, a technique he traces back to the 17th-century painter Adam Elsheimer. The result is light that doesn’t illuminate so much as linger.
We stood in front of this for longer than expected. @flowersgallery

A special mention to @ginapower our guide for both tours, and the reason the afternoon had such good bones. Gina has the rarest quality in an art world companion: she tells you what she actually thinks. The works behind her depict the cube-shaped houses of Pantelleria.

Positions. A section of the fair that rewarded slowness.

One artist we loved was Barbara Ayozie Fu Safira

@edward_rollitt builds worlds before he photographs them. Antique furniture, decayed textiles, soil, dust assembled into environments where objects carry the full weight of memory. The camera comes last, translating the three-dimensional into something a single image has to hold entirely. Presented by @victorialawprojects as part of The Living Trace in the Discovery section.

Yan Wang Preston didn’t just study Manet’s Olympia, she rebuilt it from the inside. A theatre designer, a florist, a textile artist, a botanist, a large-format camera operator. Every petal identified, every fringe measured, every centimetre of that forced and uncomfortable reclining position practised until the body knew it. In doing so, she discovered that the central flowers were peonies: the oldest cultivated flower in China, first shipped to London from Canton in 1787, the same year the Bounty sailed for Tahiti to collect food for enslaved workers on British plantations.

Florence Montmare book signing at Photo London fair on Saturday, May 16th, 3-4pm.

In Scenes from an Island, artist and photographer Florence Montmare presents her second monograph, a collection of images and texts created between 2014 and 2024 during residencies at the Ingmar Bergman Estate on the Swedish island of Fårö.

Told in three acts and in collaboration with refugees and islanders, Montmare has created scenarios played out against the remote barren cinematic island. The elemental conditions of a landscape, with figures transitioning through, speak to the human condition of displacement and transience; bodies contrasted with the desolate topography of the mountains, the earth, the water, and the air. “During times of global conflict, the relationship to nature is crucial to find meaning and connection. Natural elements are stripped down and laid bare,” Montmare says, “allowing a contemplation of the rocks and sea to function as a mirror, and in reflection, you can see an essence of yourself.”

I’ll be heading to Paris for Paris Photo. While I won’t be exhibiting this year, I look forward to exploring the fair, connecting with galleries, and advancing my research for the "Dialogue" project. This project investigates the relationship between urban spaces and natural elements, exploring how green spaces, even in metropolitan areas, can foster well-being and a reflective connection to the environment.
If you’re attending, it would be a pleasure to connect and discuss perspectives on art, urban culture, and environmental narratives.

#tb to last weekend’s amazing school trip to @hauserwirthsomerset 🌱
•
After a super speedy trip down to Castle Cary on the train (it amazingly only takes 1.5 hours from London!), Desmond picked us up in his minibus and dropped us at the gates of Hauser for an amazing tour of ‘Unconscious Landscape. Works from the Ursula Hauser Collection’ by @englishelly . We then went for a stroll around the stunning gardens in the sunshine followed by a delicious lunch of chicken and plums @rothbarandgrill ! With full bellies, we then meandered across the fields to @make_hwsomerset in Bruton for another quick tour before hopping on the train back to London Town. Basically, the best day trip ever! AND they gave us goody bags stuffed with a gorgeous book on the exhibition and lots of info on what’s on this summer - pretty darned handy as we’re already planning our next trip..! Thanks to everyone involved in making it such a huge success! 🌞
