One of the most truly radical acts of theatre still going today is @traversetheatre's Class Act.

The idea is simple: several professional playwrights are each assigned a school in Edinburgh. That playwright then works with the students (roughly 15-17 years old) in their school, across a term, to develop students one act plays. They can write these plays by themselves, in twos or in a group. At the end of this term, The Trav assembles a group of professional actors to come along and bring those plays to life.

For the actors this means the first day is spent travelling to each of the schools, meeting the students, and reading their scripts in front of them. The second day is spent at The Trav. The first 3/4's of which is spent very quickly rehearsing and blocking the students plays, then quickly teching the shows. After a break for dinner, the schools begin to arrive and funnel in to Trav 1, the lights go dark, and the students get to see their plays brought to life in one of Scotland's most famous theatres.

Having done several iteration's of Class Act, I can't convey just how phenomenal many of these scripts are. It's no exaggeration to say that if your shelf of plays one day somehow snapped and they all landed on the floor and some of these Class Act one-act plays ended up in the mix, you wouldn't know which were school students and which were the professional playwrights. Some are the most hilarious, surreal, slapstick plays you'll ever see outside of One Man, Two Guvnors or an Alistair McDowell play. Others are heartbreakingly honest and devastating. The opportunity for these kids to see the adult world take them and their work seriously is invaluable and you can see (across a very short period of time) how much it does for them.

It also does a lot for actors. I was first brought aboard by a director who wanted to bring new faces into Scottish theatre. This director felt Scottish theatre was too reliant on the same actors (some would say this is still the case) and they wanted to change this. It's a place where countless actors get to be brought into the Traverse fold for the first time, are given a crucial financial lifeline, and leave changed.

Genuinely stunned I've been nominated for @ukpantomime Barbara Windsor Award for Best Principal Lead! I honestly could not have even dreamed of being recognised at this level without the incredible support of every single person on and off stage @thegaiety . To me, this one is for all of us!

It's nice to see my marketing degree doing well though, eh?😂
