“This is the first time I've shared my sober/recovery story publicly.

GINO BLACK – MY SOBER STORY

In the summer of 2019, after a decade of abusing hard alcohol on a regular basis, I found myself on the verge of dying. I’ve worked in the music business for many years and had spent the last 13 years living in Miami, Florida. I ran a recording studio, produced records, promoted night clubs, managed talent and partied like a rock star nearly every night of the week; all while maintaining a lucrative corporate day job.

I’m exhausted just thinking about my journey. My poison was whiskey. I loved my whiskey. I knew full well that I was doing severe damage to my liver; however, I never stopped. I couldn’t stop. I convinced myself that this was apart of my lifestyle and as long as I didn’t hurt anyone else I was good to go.

I thought I was invincible. I was selfish. I didn’t listen to my family members when they expressed concern for my well being. I was drunk quiet often in front of my teenage children. I disappointed my children on more than one occasion. Between 2009 and 2013, drinking contributed to the death of a 25-year marriage.

After several attempts (2014-2018) to quit drinking as various rehab programs, AA meetings and counseling service that didn’t work (for me), I quit drinking in May 2019. I quit “cold turkey” without clinical supervision.
[Note: By this time I was remarried. I would not have made it through this time without my current wife. She was kind enough to show me patience, compassion and understanding. She not only held me up with her love, but she also took care of me physically when I was too weak to stand and care for myself and she still does.]”

@ginoblackofficial story continued

“One month later (June) while exercising, my body collapsed. After several weeks of feeling good about my new sobriety, I was diagnosed with acute cirrhosis of the liver. I needed a liver immediately. I spent the summer in and out of the hospital. I needed a transplant in order to continue to live. The entire remainder of 2019, I did everything that was advised by physicians to get on the national transplant list. That included remaining alcohol free for at least six months. It also included ongoing mental therapy sessions, drug counseling and weekly check-ins and ongoing medical treatment under the care of doctors. Between September (2019) and January (2020), I literally spent at least two weeks per in the hospital.

Flash-forward to February 3rd 2020, I was still NOT on the national transplant list. I had done all the steps, passed all the tests and still getting physically worse. While at non-related doctor’s visit, I lost consciousness.

I received a new liver on February 7th 2020! I received written notice that I finally became transplant eligible when I was discharged on February 17th.

A few weeks later, COVID-19 hit us all. I spent the entire lockdown (2020) recuperating. My wife and my mother cared for me during this time. I had to completely modify my lifestyle along with abstinence from alcohol. As of 2021, I’m healthy, clean and sober and back to recording and producing music. Since January 1st 2021, I’ve written, produced, recorded and performed on over 12 different projects. On average, I released at least one new song per month this year. Additionally, I amassed over 100,000 streams of the new material. I’m healing and healthy. I’m still working on the recovery process. Things are going fantastic!

I’m also in the early stages of building mentoring and motivational campaign to help others who are struggling with addiction.”
