Tough one at Acrisure — Firebirds fall 5-2 to San Jose. 🏒
CV Digest is the valley's free weekly newsletter — join 7,000+ locals at cvdigest.com, link in bio.

The Birds dug an early hole on Oktoberfest Night as San Jose struck twice in the first seven minutes. Lukas Dragicevic (assists from Alexis Bernier and Logan Morrison) cut it to 2-1 late in the first — his second goal in as many games. The Barracuda pulled away in the second, and Jani Nyman (from Morrison and Tyson Jugnauth) tallied with 39 seconds left to close it. Nikke Kokko made 29 saves; the Birds were outshot 34-24. Both clubs went 0-for-3 on the power play.

The party didn't miss a beat off the ice — Sauer Sam & the Tablecloth Band had the Indian Wells Sound Stage rolling before puck drop, and the Oktoberfest atmosphere was in full force all night.

Next up: the Birds host the Tucson Roadrunners on Wednesday at 7 PM — Winning Wednesday means $5 food and drink specials, plus BOGO tickets if the Firebirds win.

He just wanted a Painted Dough donut 🍩 — but apparently waiting for the season to start was asking WAY too much. 😂

The wait is officially OVER! 🏒🔥 Catch the Firebirds Home Opener Friday night and come see us at SECTION 118 for your Painted Dough fix.

And like Gino said… “BEST DONUTS ON EARTH!” 🌎🍩

The Coachella Valley Firebirds have a new captain — and he's been here since day one. 🔥

John Hayden is officially the second captain in Firebirds history.

Only one man wore the "C" before him. Max McCormick led this team to two Calder Cup Finals and is retiring to the trash business. GM Troy Bodie had the line of the day: "very apropos, considering he would clean up trash around the net all the time."

Now it's Hayden's letter.

Why it matters: in hockey, the captain isn't just the best player or the loudest voice. He's the guy the room follows. He carries the coach's message to the players and brings the players' concerns back to the coach. In the AHL, where one call-up can gut a roster overnight, he's the anchor.

Bodie called the pick a "no-brainer." Head coach Derek Laxdal called Hayden "a natural-born leader." He said when fans ask him around town who'll be captain, Hayden's name always comes up.

The résumé backs it up:
🏒 Captained Yale as a senior
🏒 272 NHL games with Chicago, New Jersey, Arizona, Buffalo and Seattle
🏒 An original Firebird since the 2022 inaugural season

What got me wasn't the hockey talk. It was Hayden talking about the desert. He and his wife welcomed a daughter during his time here, and he said the Valley "feels like home at this point."

His favorite moment in five years? After two months on the road in Year One while Acrisure Arena was finished, the team finally came home, and the fan reception was "incredible." He says that energy has never left.

He's not promising a one-man show. Leadership will be "by committee," with alternate captains Gustav Olofsson, Mitchell Stephens, Logan Morrison and Ty Nelson wearing the "A."

And he knows what's on the line: "The standard and expectation here is to win."

His first game with the "C" is Friday, Oct. 2 — Season Five opens against the Ontario Reign at Acrisure Arena. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
