Welcome back! It’s Hispanic Heritage Month so this week we highlighted #CasaAlegre that once was here at 852 Westchester Ave. It was a legendary Latin record store founded in 1955 by musician and record producer Alberto “Al” Santiago. It became more than a place to buy records—it was a gathering spot for musicians and music lovers during a period when the South Bronx was becoming a major center of Latin music. Santiago carefully cataloged the music he sold, while musicians visited the store to hear new records, exchange ideas and make connections.

Among those who worked there was #MikeAmadeo, who later became the owner #CasaAmadeo which is the oldest continuously run record store in New York City. It’s just around the corner on Prospect Avenue.

In 1956 only about a year after opening, Santiago founded Alegre Records, operating from the same location as the record shop. The label became one of NYs influential Latin record companies in the years leading into the salsa era, recording artists such as Johnny Pacheco, Charlie Palmieri, Eddie Palmieri, Orlando Marín and Sabú Martínez. Santiago also created the Alegre All-Stars, whose jam-session recordings brought together some of NYs outstanding Latin musicians years before the better-known Fania All-Stars. Casa Alegre remained connected to the Latin record business until 1978.

Tuesday night our runners and run/walkers went to the location it once stood. There’s a Rite Aid there now. Our walkers walked over to 138th & Brown Place to the former music hall, Teatro Puerto Rico because that’s where Santiago used to perform.

What began as a neighborhood South Bronx record shop ultimately became an important hub for musicians, recordings and record distribution, giving Casa Alegre an important place in the history of New York Latin music and the development of salsa.

Welcome back! In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re shining the spotlight on Bronx music legend — #JohnJellybeanBenitez! He was born to Puerto Rican parents but raised by his mother in the South Bronx. He grew up with music all around him, often digging through his sister’s record collection. It was his sister that gave him the nickname “Jellybean” when he was just 10 years old! Growing up in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood, he quickly discovered the power of music — especially how a DJ could bring an entire room together and make people forget their troubles.

After attending DeWitt Clinton and John F. Kennedy high schools and dropping out to pursue a career as a deejay.

Jellybean made his way into NYCs booming disco and nightclub scene. By 1981, he was the resident DJ at the legendary #Funhouse, where he was introduced to a young, up-and-coming singer named #Madonna. That meeting would become a major chapter in pop music history. #JellybeanBenitez worked on Madonna’s 1983 debut album, contributing to “Everybody,” “Borderline” and “Lucky Star,” while producing one of her earliest signature hits — “Holiday.” From there, his résumé exploded, with production and remix work for stars including Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Paul McCartney.

But Jellybean wasn’t only making hits for other artists — he had his own success with songs like “Sidewalk Talk,” “Who Found Who,” “The Real Thing,” “Jingo” and “Just a Mirage.”

Decades later, his love affair with music and vinyl is still going strong through Jellybean’s Funhouse, his record shop in Fort Lauderdale. From digging through records as a Puerto Rican kid in the South Bronx to helping shape the sound of dance and pop music around the world, John “Jellybean” Benitez is another reminder that Bronx history reaches far beyond the borough! That’s your Bronx history.

Welcome back! Tuesday night we ran and walked over to this relic, hidden by the new developments under the Third Avenue bridge. Many have no idea that this building once housed two businesses that practically defined the industrial South Bronx since the middle of the 19th century.

Constructed in 1882, the building was originally the offices of the #JLMottIronworks firm. Mott Ironworks was established in 1841 on the Harlem River waterfront by inventor & industrialist, Jordan Lawrence Mott. He’s who the neighborhood #MottHaven is named after. His company grew, attracting German and Irish immigrant workers to the South Bronx. The ironworks company moved to Trenton, NJ in 1902.
If you go past the building today you’ll see the words #BeethovenPianoCompany painted on its windows which harkens back to the South Bronx’s piano business past. In the 1880s, it was a thing for middle-class families to have a piano in their parlor. Because of the trend, several piano companies popped up to supply the demand. So some short time after JL Mott’s Ironworks moved, the building transitioned into the Beethoven Piano Company. Not to be confused with Queens based Beethoven Pianos that is currently the oldest family-owned piano store in NYC since the 1970s. This predates them.
By the early 20th century, there were 63 piano factories in the Bronx and 43 of them were right here in Mott Haven. Today, the building is occupied by a charter school. That’s your Bronx history.
