“What a Woman may be, and yet not have the Vote.” Pamela Colman Smith not only co-created the Smith Waite tarot deck, she created artwork for the Suffragists to get the Women’s Vote. The "An Anti-Suffrage Alphabet" book by Laurence Houseman accredits Pamela Colman Smith as the artist of this work of the Suffrage Atelier. Information is thanks to the detective work of scholars Elizabeth Foley O'Connor, Melissa Staiger, and Colleen Lynch. #womensrights #womensvote100 #women #womensupportingwomen #womenempowerment #womeninspiringwomen #tarot #artist #suffragist

Somehow finagled the private wine cave for last nite’s birthday dinner for my BFF. Might have been the bottle Millennial Mom ordered earlier to have sent to the table as soon as she arrived. Had to do the #tomahawk, obvi, and the #profiteroles. Also, NYC is back, baby. You should see the West Village. Took a walk after dinner and it’s so great to see everything coming back to life. Speaking of, cheers to @elledubbbbbz and her recent trip around the sun. 🥂 #befri #stends #40yrsgoingstrong

I don’t consider myself a very crafty person, but sometimes I’m able to create something I’m super proud of. Found this hole puncher while organizing my craft supplies today and thought I could recreate the cake topper I made for our wedding, but in a much smaller scale. Then all I needed was a cocktail to match. Went to one of my fave sources Imbibe & came across this gem - the Scorpion Reef from a bar down in North Carolina, Gallo Pelón Mezcaleria. New summer go-to. And, addded a few more of the things I crafted for the wedding, including Mr. & Mrs. piñatas & a pic from that day of my BFFs bc I miss them terribly. #whogavemeaknife #scorpionreef #papelpicado #diadelosmuertos #crafting #tikitime #fbf 💀👍🍹

Weekend reading: my latest article and review for @hyperallergic on “Pamela Colman Smith: Life and Work” at Pratt Institute Libraries, Brooklyn campus. Curated by Melissa Staiger and Colleen Lynch, both alum of Pratt Fine Arts. Smith was uniquely gifted, and led a fascinating and exuberant life. This exhibition serves to locate her legacy which centres around the Rider-Waite-Smith Deck of tarot cards, the largest in circulation. The exhibition ends April 11th. #artistandcritic #artinnyc #mustsee @prattlibraries @prattfineart @prattalumni @prattinstitute @gitdownabbey @melissastaiger #tarot Link: https://hyperallergic.com/490918/pamela-colman-smith-pratt-institute-libraries/

#Repost from @magicianandfool with @regram.app ... “The Blue Cat", by Pamela Colman Smith, 1907, watercolor on paper board, Alfred Stieglitz / Georgia O'Keeffe archive Yale Collection of American Literature, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University. Come for a TOUR of the exhibition about Pamela with Melissa Staiger, co-curator at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn campus. Friday, March 29 at 2pm.

Pamela Colman Smith, renowned for illustrating the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck, began her artistic career in 1893 as a student at the newly founded Pratt Institute. Her artistic output in her brief but successful career included paintings, illustrations, set and costume design for theater, a literary magazine, and books of folklore. Smith moved in bohemian circles both in New York and London, exhibiting at Alfred Stieglitz’s Gallery 291, the first non-photographer to do so, and collaborating with W.B. Yeats, Bram Stoker, and the celebrated actress Ellen Terry.
This exhibition presents an overview of Smith’s life and multi-faceted career, showing books, prints, reproductions of illustrations and paintings, and tarot decks, along with photographs of her illustrious family and friends. Telling her story and providing a context for her work, this exhibit shows how her style, archetypal subject matter, and interest in ancient spiritual traditions profoundly influenced her drawings for one of the most popular tarot decks in use, the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot. .
Linking Smith’s time to now, Pratt alumni Emi Brady, David Palladini, Jen May and Phil Williamston, will have tarot decks on display to showcase contemporary variations on the traditional deck.
This exhibition is co-curated by Pratt alumni Colleen Lynch and Melissa Staiger.
Pratt Institute Libraries – Brooklyn Campus, 200 Willoughby Avenue, enter at the corner of DeKalb Avenue and Hall Street/St. James Place.

#Repost from @josephkopta with @regram.app ... Bedazzled by @jen.may_’s Spolia Tarot project, made in collaboration with Jessa Crispin and designed by @ok_romeo. I’m reminded of David Bowie aesthetics, Alejandro Jodorowsky films, with a flashing cameo by the likes of Salvador Dalí or Josephine Baker. 🃏 Currently on view at the “Pamela Colman Smith: Life and Work” exhibition, curated by @melissastaiger and Colleen Lynch at @prattlibraries (in itself a cool show about, organized by, and featuring @prattfineart @prattinstitute alumnae!) #jenjmay #jenmay #tarot #tarotcards #tarotdeck #contemporaryart #workonpaper #spolia #spoliatarot #artoftheday #instaart #prattinstitute #pamelacolmansmith #collage #collageart
