Sri Lanka Road Trip with Kaarwan Lunuganga - Geoffery Bawa’s Country Estate

Any journey to Sri Lanka is incomplete without a trip to Lunuganga. We reached this country estate of Geoffrey Bawa on the 8th day of our road trip. Lunuganga is an Italian inspired gardens, with spectacular views over the lake and tropical jungle, that has been transformed into a series of outdoor rooms creating a huge feeling of space. Vistas that have been carefully chosen to emphasize their beauty with points of architecture and art; from entrances, pavilions, broad walks to a multitude of courtyards and pools.

Lunuganga apart from being his estate was his workshop. It was initially a small rubber plantation Surrounded by the Dedduwa lake and fruit trees, coconut palms with rice fields. He enjoyed altering his house and transforming the rubber plantation so much that he decided to become an architect!

The experience of visiting Lunuganga was humbling to say the least. Learning about a young man’s effort to transform his garden eventually making him one of the most sought after Architects instilled in us that inspiration and motivation can come from unexpected sources.

Sri Lanka Road Trip with Kaarwan | Bawa’s Lighthouse hotel
•
On the 9th day of our Road trip, we visited the illustrious Lighthouse Hotel designed by two of Sri Lanka’s leading architects - Geoffery Bawa and his protege, Channa Daswatte. By this point in our journey we were familiar with Bawa’s use of space, light and materials that worked in symbiosis with their environment. We could see his signature everywhere; from the use of earth toned colours, to the singular fusion of Moorish, Oriental and Dutch influences.
•
Upon entrance we were greeted with Laki's Metal sculptures - a reenactment of Portuguese landing on the banks of Galle in the 17th century battle. The hotel that people said “couldn’t be built”, has since won many awards for its design around a natural environment such that not even a rock or boulder had to be removed. Bawa’s structuctures are great reinforcements to “architecture has to be experienced” •

Sri Lanka Road Trip with Kaarwan | #Galle fort - The little piece of #Holland

Bright and early on day 8, we headed over to Galle fort, to catch the colonial wonder at the golden hour. The 36-hectare #UNESCO world heritage site was built in 1663 and is influenced by #Dutch, #Portuguese, and later by the #British. The low-rise wide streets are lined with colonial #villas; each with its #garden or veranda are testaments to its European heritage.

As we walked on the ramparts, we could see the vast blue ocean on one side and a fantastic marriage of European architecture and South Asian traditions on the other. The #colourful facades, the 16th Century bell tower, the post-office and the small little bakeries scattered around this town were mesmerizing even in through the little drizzle we braved.

UNESCO describes it as ‘the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and Southeast Asia’ and we don’t disagree

Sri Lanka Road Trip with Kaarwan | Ruhuna University the modern Porto-Sinhalese wonder
•
We won't blame if you thought this was some #tropical #beach side #resort in Sri Lanka 😅. Bawa's Ruhuna gave us an insight into complex planning. The humble buildings flowing with the terrain with country tile roofs were a refreshing change from the modern institutional architecture. We could immediately picture ourselves sitting in the traditional classrooms, or cozy up in a secluded corner at the well-lit library or just hang-out with friends in one of the many seating spaces! Though the complex was huge, all the buildings felt cohesive and complemented their backdrops.

Sri Lanka Road Trip with Kaarwan | Ravana Falls
•
The wide #RavanaFalls gushes down from an oval concave rock. This cave was the Ravana cave and said to be original cave where #Ravana first hid #Seetha after kidnapping her.

We dived and relaxed along this beautiful waterfall. Locals say, in peak monsoon this waterfall takes the shape of drooping areca flower. The stalls outside these falls have a selection of tropical fruits!

Be careful of the slippery stones here, we took one too many falls here to be cautious.

Sri Lanka Road Trip with Kaarwan | Iconic Nine-Arch Bridge in Ella
•
One of the highlights in the mountain village #Ella is the 30-meter high Demodara #NineArchBridge. The beautiful nine arches makes it a very #picturesque spot especially as it is located in a dense jungle and tea plantations.

This engineering marvel of the 20th century is built entirely from rocks, bricks, and cement with no use of steel or metals throughout the structure and the participants also discovered each individual pier as multiple smaller arches. The sharp bend and the egg-shaped tunnel makes it very picturesque especially when the train passes through!

Of course, dancing to Chhaiya Chhaiya while waiting for the train was an experience in itself!

That time, I think you're getting into me just like a falling star, take you up to the sky you don't need to be afraid
hold my hand, close your eyes you can see the galaxy
take you up to the sky you don't need to be afraid
stars will hug you hard and makes us into fair galaxy...
