POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

The latest - and in many ways proudest - addition to the music room.

When @aimee_searles_ persuaded me to move to Beckenham a few years back, one of the first things we did was attend an amazing house concert at @thornsettroad run by the inimitable @chriskeniger

We already knew @gkeniger from being fans of her art but this husband bloke was a dark horse. The show was incredible and everyone thoroughly lovely. I tried to weasel my way on to the list with @marenghibeat but, alas, the kind of music I make with @tidyburney is too raucous for such a refined setting. Playing the long game, I befriended this magnanimous host and, having fooled him in to thinking that I’m a good egg, produced the debut EP by his band @thelongshorts

This has led to other incredible musical partnerships, producing for the supremely talented @susiebmusic getting to form another side project with the humble genius @jennynewtonmusic (more from that in 2026 - believe me) and eventually, creating the alt-folk super-duo Biting Fauna with Chris himself. It was in this latest incarnation that I finally got to play for the kind and generous crowd at last week’s house concert and it was Christmas come early in every sense.

After a year with the usual ups and downs, I am lucky to reflect on the music I have shared with all these people as well as my @solararraysounds homies @retrooriginalone @djshorty79 and @jo.bowes.242 and I could not be more fortunate. Turning old with this much awesomeness in my life has been better than that idiotic kid who wanted to be a pop star could ever have imagined.

It’s been a merry Christmas so far and will hopefully be a very happy new year.

A year ago today we started with a very simple plan. We were finally going to tick recording our songs off the bucket list.

It might not have been as simple as the plan made it sound, but with the expert help of our producer Matt, the additional musical talents of Jenny, the artistic skill of Gerri, we recorded and released our 1st EP ‘Long Story Short’, a collection of songs that makes a great introduction to The Long Shorts.

I’m happy to say that today, the follow up album is well under way. In the meantime, please do check it out in all the normal places, and if you’d like to support a small artist, it’s available to buy from Bandcamp.

Gerri gave me a framed 12” print of our Long Shorts EP artwork, and I love it!

A friend asked at one of the launch gigs, what was the idea behind the image. The truth is, when I told Gerri the idea she said this was immediately what came to mind and she described it precisely.

I think it’s very open to interpretation, but I like to think that it represents our positivity and optimism as we reach for what makes us happy.

One of the things I’ve held on to for me this year is music.

I wrote songs before I learnt how to play guitar, and I play because I feel a drive too, not because I feel confident in my playing.

I pledged earlier this year that we’d record some songs, the deadline was within 12 months, but I’ve said that before. The idea was do to it before I hit 50, my own self imposed ‘bucket list’ - with one item on it.

This weekend, well before that deadline, we released and performed our first Long Shorts EP. Not only that but we organised and coordinated two launch gigs, a CD and merchandise and musical guests to play with us. Oh, and we wrote a new song.
90% of this was done via text message, and most of my rehearsing was done to videos.

As we’ve already said officially, it was absolutely brilliant, but to be a bit more transparent, while our audience was modest - old dudes playing original tunes has a limited appeal - we gave it our absolute all each night and were humbled by the incredible and enthusiastic response.

More than that, my specific highlights were compliments to my songwriting, hearing the rooms sing along with us, being asked to sign the CD, and getting to share the stage with such excellent musicians.

I’ve said my thank yous, but my gratitude to everyone who helped us get here is absolute. Now, we want to get out there and share the music a little further. And maybe, just maybe, make a little more!

Available to buy via digital download or CD via Bandcamp - where they take no fees if you order today.

Included with your ticket price if you come to our London launch at Revolution Records in Penge tomorrow.

Or at The Railway Inn in Winchester on Sunday.

We are indebted to everyone who has collaborated and brought positive creativity to these songs, and we are grateful for the advice and support from everyone who’s helped and encouraged us recently. You have made this a reality with us.

So many of the songs I’ve written become a bit mysterious to me, they are a product of serendipity, and when I listen back I can’t always explain where they came from, so to have them recorded is such a personal achievement.

We’d love you to give ‘Long Story Short’ a listen and a share. We hope you enjoy!

Had the absolute pleasure of being on the stall for Gerri at Crystal Palace Subway yesterday.

The subway is the recently restored original entrance to the Crystal Palace exhibition hall and is beautifully patterned in red and yellow brick stock.

Hosted by The Paxton Centre, and despite the blustery weather, there was a queue out the door the entire day with over 2000 visitors coming to the market.

Happily we sold lots of Christmas cards, gifts and a some prints, which was brilliant, and met some incredible local people.

Part of the joy of making this EP is collecting together some standalone songs and making them a piece of work.

It was also a chance to develop how we see ourselves, both with a title - ‘Long Story Short’ - that represents both my songwriting ethos, and our friendship and musical adventures.

I’ve been waiting a long time to ask Gerri to create some artwork for our music, and when I told her the title she almost immediately described the cover picture, while simultaneously saying she didn’t know why the image came to her.

I love it, and I believe Dan does too, because it has a feel of attempting something unpredictable. Of doing something unconventional that feels like it should work out. Probably.

I like that it asks more questions than it answers.

A huge thank you to Gerri for our lovely and perfect ‘Long Story Short’ artwork.

I was lucky enough to pick up this wonderful artwork from @gkeniger at the @happybeeshpabe Christmas Fair the other week. Gerri is a great supporter of local creation and you should have a look at her other creations. Thanks Gerri!

The absolute powerhouse behind our family. This weekend Gerri is displaying just two of her styles of work as part of the Beckenham Arts Trail.

Her silhouette & digital prints are on display at Three Hounds beer cafe on Beckenham Road.

She’ll also be showing a range of acrylic organic prints and greetings cards at Citygate Church on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th August between 10am-5pm.

Come down and visit.
