@aocinitiative The Artists of Colour Initiative (AOC) is a scholarship competition designed to provide financial assistance and industry support to 6 exceptionally talented Theatre performers, based in Australia that identify as Bla(c)k, Indigenous or People of Colour.

LEAH HOWARD is that quintessential quadruple-threat; performer, resident director, choreographer and mentor, with a professional career spanning more than 20 years.
▪️Leah recently choreographed Australia’s first online LIVE musical (amidst the Covid-19 pandemic) titled Who’s Your Baghdaddy or How I Started the Iraq War. Prior to this Leah was Resident Director for the Australia/ China/ NZ tour of School of Rock.
▪️Some of Leah’s Creative and Performance credits include; Disney’s Aladdin, Legends!, Mary Poppins, Avenue Q, Hair, Fame the Musical, The Rocky Horror Show, Dein Perry’s Steel City (Australia and Radio City Music Hall NYC), UK tour of Tap Dogs Rebooted and Tap Dogs USA.
▪️In 2020 Leah became the Creative Director of a new magazine called ‘Rogue La Vie – Stories of Colour and Beyond. Connecting Humanity’. It aims to highlight the stories of all our wonderful human beings of colour. Big love!

‘Everyone needs a house to live in, but a supportive family is what builds a home.’ .
Torch the Place offered a glimpse into the life of someone with Hoarding disorder and explored the complexity and consequences if it’s left untreated. It gave no clear solution or cure as that would have been inaccurate and unfair. Instead the play gave love and hope to many people whose lives have been touched by hoarding. The response has been overwhelming. I can’t express enough how important it is for people to feel like their story has been heard and explored with empathy and understanding. .
Torch the Place is a tale of survival. What the human heart can tolerate under great loss. We see the struggles of a family that has migrated to Australia and attempted to create a new life. In the final scene, even after they discover a box that contains their mothers poo in a plastic bag, I’m moved by how the family learns to truly love and value each other.

This is a family portrait I doodled of some of the Torch the Place family that helped bring @mrbenjaminlaw play to life. Our director @deanjbryant somehow wrangled our junk and organised into neat little boxes. It takes a dedicated creative team to breathe life into a piece of theatre and a special hard working crew to keep it running every night. The future is uncertain for many people who worked on this play and in our industry. Like the play, I know our theatre family and industry will survive with love and compassion.

Theatre can connect us. It reminds us what is in our hearts. This little family with always burn bright in my heart.

Torch the Place unexpectedly took its final bow on Saturday evening. Over 14 000 people attended the show throughout the season. We couldn’t be more grateful for the generous response to the production. We are devastated not to be able to finish performing the season. This is an unprecedented event and we must take the necessary precautions in this uncertain time. We thank everyone their understanding and well wishes. Finished up on Saturday night not knowing it was our closing night.
The set and props remain on stage waiting patiently for the players to play.
But there will be no lights on stage tonight.
No story will come to life tonight.
No laughing. No crying. No curtain calls. That stage will sit there, empty of life, until crew can come in to pack it up.
My team has made it easier, lightening the load with so much uncertainty over our heads. More than ever we have to stick together. More than ever stories need to be shared. X #mtctorchtheplace

Having a few days to de-Hair has been needed, but I already miss this gaggle of funky hippies to no end.
@hairthemusicalau has been such an incredibly rewarding, challenging and vital experience. Playing Claude Hooper Bukowski has been a bucket list experience, made even more palpable by the fine individuals in these few, limited shots. There’s too many to choose from. But I can honestly say I feel blessed and empowered again to step on stage with confidence; with a full heart and gratitude, because of this tribe.
Enough sap, but I love you team, and look forward to telling more stories in the future with you all.
