🎧 Southside Chronicles podcast Ep 9 ~ Sampling some stops from our August and #GlasgowDoorsOpenDays walks of Tradeston... Tour leader Laura along with Cameron and Andrew from SGHET take us to several of the landmark buildings featured in our tour of the area and its neighbouring localities of Kingston and Port Eglinton.

https://glad.radio/sside-chron-9-tradeston/

Not often seen up-close or on foot by many Glaswegians, as the area has become a massive off-ramp for the motorway system, Laura puts these unseen buildings back in the spotlight, illuminating their original uses and placing them in the context of a once vibrant area thronged with people, tenements and factories and which even boasted its own canal to the Ayrshire coast.

Big changes are coming to Tradeston... raising the question can its history and future co-exist? There's one sure way to find out. Get the inside track on its remarkable industrial and civic heritage on the cusp of massive surrounding redevelopment... in our podcast and in future re-runs of this eye-opening Southside perambulation.

Stay tuned to the end for a bonus interview with with Joe Waterfield from Historic Environment Scotland in which he explains the free resources people can access to learn about the history of their local area

📍 Did you come to the walk in August or September this year..? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

What a fantastic four days at Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival 2026! @glasgowdodf As one of Glasgow's participating cultural venues, Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre welcomed hundreds of visitors of all ages to our gallery at Trongate 103 for a series of visits.

Throughout the festival, we introduced our visitors to the extraordinary kinetic art of Eduard Bersudsky and the fascinating story of Sharmanka, with short presentations and mini performances featuring some of our remarkable kinemats.

With fully booked sessions, plenty of questions, lively conversations and smiling faces, it was wonderful to see so much curiosity and enthusiasm for our work, and to introduce Sharmanka to so many new audiences!

A big thank you to everyone who joined us, and to the organisers of Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival for their hard work in bringing together such a wonderful celebration of Glasgow's architecture, cultural heritage and creative spaces.

This September we slowed down, no international travel, just exploring locally and tackling some tasks at home.
Added some touches to baby’s room. Hoping she grows up to love animals 👀. Curtains from @johnlewis with a matching lampshade and stickers from @ikeauk
Is it maternity leave if there’s no bakery crawls? Visited @kafcoffee they have a branch in the west end and Bearsden. Delicious baked goods.
A friend kindly gifted me some veggies from an allotment with home made jam. Lots of meals were made.
As always, we visited some places as part of Glasgow open doors. This time we went to the Scottish mask and puppet centre and watched a show. Incredible talent, I hope the craft doesn’t die.
We also saw a 300 million old fossil of trees at Queen’s Park.
What was your September like?

👋September, you flew by!
It’s been a super busy month for us, welcoming lots of new students into our spaces — and there’s plenty more to come!
Here’s a little look back at September:

1️⃣ We were blessed with some beautiful September sunshine ☀️

2️⃣ A detail from Analogue Archives & Digital Designs, curated by Katy West. The exhibition brought together ceramic plates made by GSA students during Independent Study Week in February 2026, inspired by GSA Archives & Collections and the work of artist and GSA graduate Holmes Gray.

3️⃣4️⃣ We had a great time at the Freshers’ Fair, with a brilliant response to our poster competition and lots of badge-making!

5️⃣6️⃣ We hosted a tour and a full day of drop-ins during Freshers’ Week, with lots of interesting and meaningful conversations along the way. Thanks to everyone who came along!

7️⃣8️⃣ We ended the month with Doors Open Days, this year’s theme being Glasgow Goes Out. We got out some fashion show pieces, as well as some great objects that we don’t often have on display. It was lovely to get them out and share them with visitors!

9️⃣ And finally, some exciting new acquisitions! We’re especially pleased to have acquired Spiral Field by SEA graduate Jasmin Robertson — the first Sustainability Prize-winning work to join our collections. 🌱

Ding Doon the Dyke! 🗞

This September, as part of Scottish Archaeology Month and Doors Open Day, we dug deeper in-to Glasgow's lesser-known social history at the site of Harvie's Dyke in the city's East End.

The story begins when wealthy industrialist Thomas "Lang Tam" Harvie, having recently come into fortune through his flourishing coal and whisky businesses, purchased Westhorn Estate. The estate sat next to the River Clyde and included a popular public walkway along the river banks. Harvie quickly became irritated by the constant use of this path nearby his impressive new dwelling and decided to take matters into his own hands to keep the people of the city out. He decided to build two enormous walls to block the public pathway, and released large dogs on the land to frighten passersby.

The people of Glasgow responded by destroying Harvie's 'dykes' with gunpowder charges. This was the start of a 6 year long conflict between them and Harvie. Harvie eventually rebuilt his walls, adding iron spikes on top, dumping smashed bottle glass from his distilleries and bars around river banks, and fortified his summerhouse with a cannon emplacement.

When the case was eventually brought up through the courts to the House of Lords, they ruled in favour of the people of Glasgow. This decision forms the legal basis for Rights of Way, from which in Scotland we have won the Right to Roam.

As well as excavating, we celebrated this historic triumph with walks, talks, tours, workshops and a participatory play.

Stay tuned for more about what we found at the site!

Thanks to everyone involved in the 'Digging the Dyke' events at the weekend, part of this year's 'Doors Open Days' festival.

The bike tour enjoyed much better weather, and covered a bit more ground.

It was great to see the @archaeologyscotland dig site, and hear about their discoveries.

And always a joy to watch people learning about the story of Tam Harvie's Dyke through interactive theatre and song....

We finished off @glasgowdodf by having a more relaxed day visiting Holmwood House 🏛️🤍

The house has beautiful green grounds where they set up outdoor toys for the kids to play and there's loads of space to enjoy a picnic or pick up cake and coffee from the cafe to enjoy outside (...or inside 🌧️)

I'd recommend the tour if you have a baby that's a bit more chilled than mine...the rooms are very echoy and it's hard to hide the very loud babbling 🫠. The staff were so forgiving of the baby being disruptive and the tour was really engaging (the little I did hear)

Alexander Thomson’s architecture is just breathtaking and I've definitely taken some home decor inspo!

I always forget to take advantage of Doors Open Day but not this year!

We took the subway down to Govan then Kelvinhall, exploring Glasgow's rich history one stop at a time! 🚇✨

The itinerary:

📍Fairfield Heritage, 1048 Govan Road, Govan

Govan’s legendary shipbuilding roots in insanely photogenic historic drawing offices. You can also cast a stitch in the Clydeside Tapestry.

📍Glasgow Press, 21 Clydebrae St, Glasgow

Behind-the-scenes print and media history. This was the most interactive. You can print an A3 @emilychappellillustration library print and get it signed by Emily herself, you can add your name to a newspaper headline with @newspaperclub AND you can make your own print which was specially designed for the event by @kswpress

📍Subway Studios, The Hive, 1069 Argyle St, Finnieston

Checking out local creative spaces right where the city moves. If you've got good subway anecdotes make sure you head down and share it with them.

What’s not to love about talking about astrology over a cuppa.

We had a wonderful time at our Open Day here at Temple Divine yesterday. 🧡

Thank you so much to everyone who came along. It was so good to see familiar faces, meet new people and do astrology consultations throughout the day.

Despite my long-serving bike most
inconveniently being stolen that morning, while I was in the shop buying blueberry muffins to share… I still thoroughly enjoyed myself. 😂

Every chart was so different, yet the common themes always come through.

The invitation… to be more of who we are...

Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen and for being part of it. 🧡

Thank you particularly to @ffcgla and @glasgowdodf for the opportunity to be part of this!

And if you fancy exploring anything astrology related, my Astrology Essentials course, blogs and private consultations are all available right now on my website.
