What a Theremin Does

A Theremin makes sound based on where your hands are in space.

One hand controls pitch (high and low notes)
The other hand controls volume (louder and quieter)

The closer your hands get to the antennas, the more the sound changes.

Think of it like:

“One hand draws the notes”
“One hand shapes the sound”
Step 1: Show the Two Antennas

Most theremins have:

A vertical antenna → controls pitch
A loop antenna → controls volume

Simple explanation:

Move toward the pitch antenna = higher notes
Move away = lower notes

For volume:

Hand closer to loop = quieter
Hand farther away = louder
(Some theremins react opposite depending on setup.)
Step 2: Start With Only Pitch

Beginners learn faster if they focus on one hand first.

Have them:

Stand still
Move their pitch hand slowly toward the antenna
Listen carefully to how the sound rises

Tell them:

“Tiny movements make big changes.”

The biggest beginner mistake is moving too fast.

Step 3: Practice Holding One Note

Before songs, teach control.

Exercise:

Try to “freeze” the hand and hold one steady tone
Then slowly move to another note

This builds muscle memory and ear training.

You can compare it to:

balancing on a bicycle
or tuning a radio very carefully
Step 4: Add the Volume Hand

Now introduce the second hand.

Simple exercise:

Keep a steady pitch
Open and close the volume hand slowly

Teach it like breathing:

softer
louder
softer again

This helps them play musically instead of making random sci-fi sounds.

Step 5: Teach Simple Songs

Start with melodies they already know:

“Happy Birthday”
“Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”
slow movie themes

Familiar melodies help train the ear.

Best Beginner Tips
Relax your shoulders
Stand in the same spot every time
Move slowly and intentionally
Use your ears more than your eyes
Practice short sessions daily
A Simple Way to Describe the Experience

You can tell students:

“The theremin is less like pressing buttons and more like sculpting sound in the air.”

That usually helps the instrument click mentally for beginners.

Tonight inside Glass Note Studio, the signals come from somewhere beyond the stars.

In this session with the theremin, I explore strange frequencies, alien textures, and atmospheric sounds that feel like transmissions from deep space. With every movement near the antennas, the pitch bends and shifts into haunting tones while the volume control creates waves of sound that pulse like cosmic energy drifting through the void.

The theremin feels less like an instrument and more like communicating with an unseen force. Small adjustments to the pitch and volume knobs completely transform the sound — from eerie spacecraft echoes and vintage sci-fi effects to unsettling frequencies that sound almost alive.

What kind of frequency do you make?
What hidden signal exists between noise and silence?
Maybe somewhere out there… something is listening.

“E.T. Phone Home.”

This experiment captures the mystery, excitement, and strange beauty of analog sound exploration inside VITRUM OBSCURA. More sonic experiments, dark atmospheres, and extraterrestrial transmissions are coming soon.

$From the ashes of Nigredo emerges Albedo — “The Whitening.” An AI visual journey through the sacred alchemical process of purification, illumination, and transformation. The video unfolds through haunting neo-classical melodies, echoing pianos, cathedral choirs, and cinematic strings as darkness slowly gives way to radiant light. Ancient stained glass windows shimmer with fractured colors while forgotten skeleton keys unlock hidden chambers of consciousness and memory. Set within crumbling Roman chapels, candlelit corridors, and ethereal dreamscapes, Albedo symbolizes the cleansing of the soul after the chaos of Nigredo. White ash drifts through sacred halls as alchemical symbols awaken beneath glowing moonlight. Metallic silver tones, marble statues, sacred geometry, and luminous veils of light create an atmosphere both mystical and transcendent. A visual meditation on rebirth, reflection, and spiritual ascent — where sorrow becomes wisdom, and shadow transforms into revelation. Neo-classical. Metaphysical. Alchemical. Available on my YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/ToPbrlx04pI This is Albedo.$
