Sunday, we opened FLOATING, our very first edition.

Seeing the exhibition come alive with the artists and their art in the light of Giudecca was incredibly special!

We were so happy to see how much the works curioused and engaged the public; people looking closely, asking questions, and starting interesting conversations around the techniques of contemporary glass and its possibilities.

A big thank you to all the artists who trusted us and made this first chapter possible with their talent and energy.

This is only the beginning of FLOATING. ✨🥂

Hello again! Our journey through the artists of 'FLOATING' 2026 goes on!

Today we introduce the ancestral resonance of Racquel Austin-Abdullah @glasseelcreative

A contemporary glass artist and descendant of the Southern Paakantji/Barkindji peoples of Far Western New South Wales, Racquel draws on Barkindji cultural knowledge and material-based storytelling to explore connections among Country, memory, and transformation. Her work for FLOATING, Kuruka (Floating in la Laguna), translates the traditional Paakantji basket-weaving practice, submerging woven vessels in shallow lake waters until activated into kiln-formed, diamond-engraved glass, drawing a quiet dialogue between the waterways of Paakantji Country and the Venetian lagoon.

🔍 Find her work on display from September 5th to 21st, 2026 at @loversoartstudio, Giudecca, Venice.

Glass Eel

Racquel Austin-Abdullah, working as Glass Eel, is a Melbourne /Naarm-based kiln glass artist creating contemporary tabletop objects and functional ware.

Working in small batches, Racquel's practice combines contemporary object making with material processes, creating pieces that sit between utility, design a nd exhibition practice.

Another bum-clenching wander through an exhibition of highly breakable things, my bag clutched to my torso lest it swing from my person like the Olympic hammer throw.

The Fuse Glass Prize at the Jam Factory Adelaide really does highlight the unbelievable ways glass artists push themselves and their chosen media.

I spent two seconds watching the hot shop activities from the viewing platform before the heat got to me - what extraordinary lengths these artists go to for their practice. Also full of admiration for the chick who managed to eat from a tube of Pringles while on the blowpipe. That, friends, is multitasking.

I’ve lifted one of these images from the artist’s page cos I somehow managed to only photograph the floor not the work 🥴 but it was so lovely I wanted to share it anyway. Sorry for stealing from you Racquel Austin-Abdullah, but what a beauty!

Racquel Austin-Abdullah trained in Visual Arts in conceptual Jewellery (North Adelaide School of Art), hot and kiln forming studio glass (South Australian School Of Art, University Of South Australia) and most recently in kiln forming and innovative glass (Melbourne Polytechnic). As an emerging studio kiln artist and owner of Glass Eel Creative, Austin-Abdullah is interested in cultural material as a product of creativity, sustainability and handling with integrity and care. In 2012 Austin-Abdullah was a finalist for the Bullseye Emerge / Evolve international juried exhibition for emerging glass exhibition in Portland, Oregon, USA. Racquel Austin-Abdullah is currently undergoing graduate coursework at Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation at the University of Melbourne and is a recent recipient of Craft Victoria Fresh Fellowship, 2025.

FINALISTS ANNOUNCED // JamFactory is thrilled to announce six finalists have been selected for the FUSE Glass Prize 2026 David Henshall Emerging Artist Prize!

The judges reviewed high quality and diverse entries from across Australia and New Zealand. The winner of the David Henshall Emerging Artist Prize receives a $5,000 cash prize plus a professional development opportunity at JamFactory valued at $5,000.

The exhibition of finalist’s works will be shown at JamFactory from 24 April - 5 July 2026 followed by the ANU School of Art & Design Gallery from 18 August – 4 September 2026

The winners of the Established and Emerging Categories will be announced on 25 June 2026.

I am so honoured to have been apart of such an amazing cohort of artists for the Fresh! Fellowship 2025. We had our last session a few days ago - it felt very bittersweet.
The year went in a blink of an eye!
