🪵 More from our summer! 💚

There is something about composting that is just plain fun. In its own beautiful way, it’s really exciting to watch the harnessed natural processes at play as we recycle organic matter into a valuable and nutrient rich soil amendment. Simply put, that’s a cool transformation to see. ♻️

Also, trust us, as you experiment with various methods, techniques, and materials, it all just gets more and more intriguing. That’s why we’ve been doing plenty of composting related testing in Floyd, Virginia (and with our friends SWVA BioChar too) this past summer and we’re still working and closely monitoring things there. 🤓

But it’s been a great time, without a doubt, we’re learning a lot and we’re getting to know an awesome area with some wonderful people (seriously, that feels like an understatement, we’ve absolutely loved our time there so much). We’re definitely not done with these studies yet though, and we’ll be sure to share more of our results as we start wrapping things up, so stay tuned! 🦠

🪵 Another one of our experiments from this past summer in Floyd, Virginia!

This time, we've been taking a closer look at something pretty simple: How much do our beneficial microbes help break down wood chips, and how fast does that happen at different application rates?

For this demonstration (as @gldmkr explains in the video), we separated the wood chips into four piles:
🪵 Control — no SoilMix applied
🌱 1 oz. of SoilMix
🍃 2 oz. of SoilMix
🦠 4 oz. of SoilMix

Let’s also take a moment to note that these aren't tiny pieces of mulch, either. We're working with fairly large wood chips (not necessarily the quickest thing to compost), which makes this an especially interesting test of decomposition over time for us.

And thanks again to Mack Blackwell, who made a quick trip into town to grab us some yardsticks and has been a wonderful helping hand in general! As a quick aside — he’s a great young man, it’s been a total pleasure to get to know him, and we know he has a bright future.

Anyhow, we placed one yardstick vertically into the center of each pile to give us a simple, consistent way to track how the piles change and settle as the experiment progresses.

We’ll be sure to update everyone as we continue to observe, measure, learn, and check back on these piles. We’ve just been so busy lately (no complaints from us though!), but we’re especially excited to continue these studies because our microbes have always done really well when it comes to any kind of composting efforts. We love this work!

That’s why this whole summer we've had in Floyd has been so amazing though, because having the opportunity to test our biology in different real-world applications is really important to us. We're confident in what our beneficial microbes are capable of, we’ve seen it a lot by now, but we always want to explore what happens in new places or environments as well and we just want to get all of the data, evidence, and proof we can to share with everyone else! Plus, sometimes the best way (and most fun way) to learn is to simply do it. 💪

We really love butterflies, travel, our work (if you can call it that even), Virginia, biology, and this wonderful LIFE! 😍🤗🦋 We've got so much to be thankful for lately, and we're feeling more than lucky. 💞 P.S. Don't forget to appreciate the beauty around you, especially as the season starts changing! 🍁

We've had a really great summer, and we're just reminiscing on that a little today. We're so lucky to do what we love, it doesn't even feel like work sometimes. We get to work with awesome folks, all the time, meet new friends, and we're able to visit wonderful places like Floyd, Virginia. 🌤

This video is from our hemp trials that we have ongoing down there, with SWVA Biochar and their excellent biochar, some compost and other tests we're studying. From our past experience, we know our beneficial microbes pair really well with hemp (friendly reminder: if you have a farm, we'd love to connect!), but these past few months down in Floyd have been such an amazing learning opportunity. 🤓

As you may know, from our previous posts on here and elsewhere, we've been been putting a lot of effort with Clean Tech Island, our Jennifer Lynn ( @gldmkr ) and many others to help develop what we're all calling a "net-positive, living showroom". Essentially, in a most basic explanation, we want to find out what works best, what products, lifestyles, practices and technologies are the most sustainable, regenerative, and practical for a community or society. So, we've been inviting anybody and everyone as we ultimately work towards more testing and more demo sites! 🚜🏔🏡

In our minds, it's all fairly simple to us, we just want to get to work to leave this world a little better than we found it (with clean, healthy, thriving soil and water resources). Let's do this together! 💚🌎

We love our CEO! 💖 She's the best in the game — she is smart, passionate, dedicated, and not afraid to get her hands dirty or put in some hard work. Basically, we're lucky to have our Jennifer and we just wanted to share a little appreciation post. That's all. 🤗🙌

🦠 With all the work we've been doing in Floyd, Virginia with Biochar Now and SWVA Biochar, one area we've been particularly having fun with is the composting projects and testing. 🌱

🌿 Together, we're running a wide variety of compost demonstrations using materials like 🪵 wood chips, sticks, 🐔 chicken litter, food waste, animal mortalities, and other organic materials. We're also evaluating different application rates of our beneficial microbes, combinations with some amazing biochar, and a variety of composting methods to better understand what works best. 🪱

🍃 It's honestly been so fascinating to watch these projects develop, and we're excited to continue learning alongside such a great group of people! Compost has always been one of our favorite applications for beneficial microbes. Helping create rich, biologically active compost while dramatically reducing offensive odors is something our microbes genuinely excel at—and less odor also often means a less inviting environment for many unwanted pests. 🍁

🎥 Anyhow, we can't wait to share more as these demonstrations continue, so stay tuned... there's MUCH more to come! 💚 And be sure to visit our YouTube channel for even more behind-the-scenes footage and project updates (plus so much more!). 🍄‍🟫

Let’s all take a moment today to celebrate International Women's Day — a time to recognize the achievements, leadership, and contributions of women all around the world.

And at Natura Solve, we’re particularly proud to be a woman-owned business led by our Founder and CEO, Jennifer Mitchell. Jennifer started this journey, and founded this company, with a vision to explore how biology can help support healthier soil and water systems. What began as research and testing in 2014 grew into a commercial company in 2018, built on curiosity, persistence, a belief in working with nature, and a desire to leave the world a better place than she found it.

Jennifer’s leadership, creativity, and unmatched dedication continue to guide our work every day. Beyond her role as a founder and businesswoman, she’s also an incredible mother, speaker, writer, and creative mind — and someone who inspires our team with both her passion and her heart.

We’re grateful for the vision and determination she brings to us and our goals (we’d be lost without her!), and today we’d like to honor her and the many women help shape a better future for everyone.

Happy International Women’s Day! 🌍💚🌱
